Canon IS lense vs Sigma/Tamron?

I'm new to the DSLR world and need some help?
Just wanted to have people's feedback on if Image Stabilisation is needed in a 18-200mm lense?
Unfortunately I can't afford the Canon but are the Sigma or Tamron lenses poor because they don't have IS?
Likewise with Nikorr VR and the Sigma/Tamron.

    Thanks

I prefer a wider aperture to IS but if I can I get both IS and f2.8

Well Sigma have a lens that has OS(optical Stabilization) that covers the 18-200mm range. But it probably has poor quality! Check out photozone.de. They give very good analysises of lenses. I think the range that you are trying to cover there is a little too big. Buy the Canon kit lens 18-55mm IS and the Canon 70-300mm lens. Both are very affordable, and have the reputation to be as good or even better than the Canon's "L" lenses. The Canon 55-250mm IS is also very affordable lens with excellent sharpness throughout its range!

I don't know much about tamron, but i know that you can get tamron lenses that has VC or something like that. It stands for vibration c-something.. Anyway, the sigma lenses will always be cheaper than canon thats for sure, but, their quality of course won't be as good as the canon ones, even though on some lenses like the 10-20 mm and the 50mm 1.4, sigma produces a quality almost as good as canon. On the sigma wide angle zoom lenses like the 18-200mm i don't think they would produce as sharp images as canon. I think they would be kind of softer. For some people that wouldn't matter, depends on what kind of photographs you take. So if i were you i would read tons of reviews on lenses on the internet. Just google them. Find what suits you best. Brand, price, quality etc. My opinion is that you should try and get a sigma lens, they pretty much work very well unless you're looking to spend alot of money.

I also need to buy a lens for taking good portraits.
A 50mm Canon 1.8 prime lens has been recommended.
It is seemingly good value and makes nice bokeh.

    Any guidance would be welcome.

I have a Sigma 70-300 apo macro for my Canon eos 400d (Digital Rebel) and it is quite sharp when a tripod is used.

I have seen a lot of negative criticism written about the Digital Rebel kit lens, but I find it useful.

I've used the Sigma 18-200 with OS, and it's surprisingly good. Has a more advanced optical stabiliser than Canon's basic one apparently. Definately save an extra €100 and get the OS with the Sigma.

Have you thought about buying a camera like a sony or pentax with image stabalisation built into the camera, then you'll get IS with any lens then. I have 2 sigma lenses, the 10-20 and the 70-300 which i use on a sony camera with built in image stabalisation.

    What camera do you have?

This might be useful as a guideline:

If your camer sensor has image stabilisation, you may not have much difficulty in choosing a suitable lens.
