Hello, yesterday i got an ibook g3, 500mhz, 576mb ram, airport. It came preloaded with tiger on it, however Im finding it quite slow.

I will only use it for mail, web, youtube (thats a big one), instant messaging and occassionally downloading songs and playing them in itunes

Tiger works slowly in my eyes, especially when watching youtube videos, they are very jumpy. Ive tried a couple of different browsers and its the same in them all.

I want to install an earlier version of mac os x or possibly xubuntu. Has anyone any recommendations of the best version. Im quite happy to install OS 9 if you think there would be a noticible improvement in preformance vs OS X

Also I think i read on on internet forum that flash videos (youtube) will not work on OS 9 - is this true?

Thanks very much for reading this far, your advice would be very much appreicaited.

    BR,
    Luke

Wow! I think you are grasping at straws there. The g3 is from 2001. I'd say the performace of youtube won't change a whole lot between OS. The code is from Adobe and is probably of similar performace across the platforms (in fact it's probably best in Tiger).

As the others wrote you probably won't have much joy around youtube or any flash videos, irrespective of your OS version.

If you can live with that, here's a couple of ways to make your little beast more responsive in general:

    - You might want to downgrade to Panther.
    - If you want to stick with Tiger, better disable Spotlight and the Dasboard, all with it's widgets. Disable all the eyecandy.
    - Free up sufficient space on your HDD, remove any unnecessary languages and strip Intel code from your unibin apps.

h264 videos (which a lot of youtube is encoded in) will not like your system at all, they are very processor intensive.

I own an iBook G4 1.42Mhz, and youtube can be kinda choppy even with that! I can imagine it would be far worse on your system. Tbh, the slowness of my iBook is beginning to peeve me, to the extent that I'm beginning to save for a new Macbook that I don't strictly need.

Do some housekeeping, man! Tidy up your mac and it will be just fine. My iBook 1.42 does everyday stuff like that without a hickup.

Sounds cool, and running older software is definitely the way to go, but I'd suggest you try 10.3 as many things simply refuse to run on 10.2. Also, it had a number uf bugs/glithes and compared to that 10.3 is rock solid.

Delighted to see that you didn't throw away the little beast but took the effort to see that it actually still can do quite a number of things for you.

I performed a clean re-install of Tiger only a few months ago and it made little discernible difference. Which isn't promising.

How much RAM do you have?

    1.5 GB, the maximum possible.

Well, it should be OK, even with today's software. I have the exact same model and it's very responsive for everyday tasks, never the slightest hickup. Maybe our expectations are different.

lol would never throw it away, even if it never worked again, it still make a good decoration.

Ill have a go with 10.3 and see if there is any difference. Im gonna have a go with ubuntu 7.04 as well, however if anyone knows of any other distro and version that works OOTB id be more then happy to give that one a whirl as well.

    cheers,
    Luke

    Hi All,

If anyones interested in what I done with this - I put tiger back on it and installed a program called MacTubes, its free and lets you download youtube songs and then I can play them in quick time with no issues. I also installed Perian so quicktime could play them.

im using firefox 3 and it does the job, i find that opera 10 seems to load pages faster and both it and safari need less resources but im happy to give up a bit of speed so I can use firefox add ons like add block plus & skins etc.

I have an iBook (clamshell version) with 10.3 I use Opera browser, it works great. Firefox was very laggy, and I forgot why I didn't try safari. It came with IE on it and it sucked. I have yet to get youtube to work on it.
