1 and a half years through 4 year college degree. I'm not so much climbing the ladder as trudging dolefully up it.

I'm always ruling supreme wherever I am because I'm class, regardless of what year I'm in at school/college.

OP ,you will only feel like that for a little while , we all have to get used to new things.
    You will be grand.

Came into the postgrad feeling the same op, but realised quite quickly (after being told so by a good friend) that they treat you as junior (junior) faculty pretty much from the off, especially if you show interest and ability.

I'm afraid of heights so I'm the guy at the bottom of the ladder, in the foetal position crying his eyes out.

I've fallen off a few ladders in my time, been climbing this one for a little over 6 months now and don't think I'll be getting dizzy anytime soon.

Its called life, we don't know what its going to throw at us , but the urge to live will make you put your foot on that bottom rung just to prove you can reach the second one.:)

At the top of the ladder I guess, having gone through my undergrad and now doing my Masters. Ready to plummet all the way back down to the bottom though next year

Im trying to get on the ladder, left a job I hated so much I was starting to go mad and had a pretty good one in the bag.... until the day before I signed the contract I was told there was a staff freeze in place for the foreseeable future and it was too late to go back to the horrible job  Its been a sore point in my house for the past two weeks!

Pretty much near the top right now. Almost a hundred men to do my bidding, I have sufficient legal authority that I don't need a judge to issue bench warrants (arrest-on-sight), and I can imprison most of them for up to a week without need for a trial.

Within three years I move to a desk job, back to the bottom of a different pile.

thats one reason i hate starting a new job, you have to prove yourself and feel like a muppet cause you dont know how to get stuff done. That changes when you are there a year or so

That said I seem to move sideways and stay on the same rung... Have to do something! Money is money!

Metaphorically speaking I was trying to pin up a college degree on the wall, and hit my head on every piece of furniture on the way down.

At the top of the ladder right now, but will be plummeting to the bottom again come September.

    Fort Irwin.

Actually, Squadron's based out of Las Vegas, so it doesn't take a lot of convincing to get me to go there for meetings, but Regimental HQ and all the equipment is at Irwin.
