Unsure about job

I went to an interview on Monday and I was sure it didn't go well. There were two people interviewing me. The office manager (who reminded quite throughout the interview. She never said a word!) and the managing director of the company. The Managing Director seemed a bit weird. He was asking me a lot of odd (and some slighty too personal) questions. During parts of the interview he was shouting at me. It was the weirdest interview I have ever been on and he made me feel really uncomfortable. Another thing, it was an open office and I had to walk through it to the Managing Director's office. Everyone working there was foreign. The managing director and office manager seemed to be the only Irish people in the company. Which is another reason why I didn't think I would get the job -- he was obviously only after cheap labour.

This evening at about 6pm the office manager phoned me up and offered me the job. She told me to come in tomorrow at 8.30am for a 6 month trial. I was so shocked I said 'yes' without thinking about it and I forgot to ask about pay. I had asked in the interview but the Managing Director was kind of evasive about it and I didn't ask more about it since I was sure they wouldn't offer me the job. I tried phoning her back about 5 minutes later, but no one was answering. She must have left right after she phoned me.

I don't know what to do now. Should I take the job or phone her up tomorrow morning and decline? I was recently made redundant for the second time this year. I've only been out of work since Friday. I'm not sure about what to do. I spoke to two friends about this; one thinks I should take the job and that I was lucky to get a job so fast in the current job climate. The other one thinks I should "run a mile" as the MD was such a bully and the job wasn't exactly what it was advertised to be... they advised it as "a secretarial role with general admin duties" on the fas website but at the interview I learned that it will be a credit control role which I have absolutely no experience of. I don't really want this job and but the way things are now has me a bit worried that I might not get another job offer soon. I was redundant for 5 weeks last time.

You haven't signed anything, just say the role doesn't suit you and leave it at that.

From what you say above i would reject the offer personally, you have already spotted a few problems that are affecting your judgement on the job.

Also you applied for the job and they have offered you a completely different position to the one you expected. You only got finished up last one on friday, personally i would decline but if you really want you could give it a weeks trial and see what they offer and if you are not happy basically tell them and leave.

the jobs market is on the floor at the moment.
Take the job but first thing you do when you go in , in the morning is to just say "can i respectfully ask the rate of pay?"
Do a day and see whats its like tomorrow - you'll be a lot more informed this time tomorrow evening.

 BE CAREFUL....if you take this job and leave it of your own free will , social welfare will probably refuse to pay you unemployment benefit for around 2 months. This is standard practice to stop people walking off the job and claiming benefit while they enjoy life !! Do stay registered as unemployed til you find a job you can stay in .

yeah, but who wants to be on the dole.
better off in the job and you'll get a better job while you are in a job.

If I go in tomorrow and only work 1 day and not give them my PPS number or P45 would social services be able to find out that I took this job and walked out of it? I have a feeling that they're only going to offer me 18K for this job anyway so I might be better off on the dole till I get a decent job.

No they wont be able to find out, if they only offer that amount then id leave straight away. If you have already try Mary recruitment, they usually advertise jobs you seem to be interested in.

Thanks for your help everyone! After thinking about it for a few hours, I think this might be some sort of scam. The interviewer was very evasive when I asked about the wages. He said he something around the lines of he "didn't believe in paying people more if they had experience because having experience doesn't mean they're right for the job". The role was advertised with a different description. I don't know why they offered the job to me even though I have no experience in credit control.

The guy interviewing me was asking me a lot of insulting questions at the interview. I feel like he was trying his best to upset me at the interview. I was very nervous and shy at the interview manly because of how he was treating me. I think he thinks he can take advantage of me.

The job was advertised as being 18K to 22K on the fas website. I initially applied for the job thinking it was a secretarial role and if I got offered the job, I'd get the higher end since I have years of secretarial experience. But since the job really is credit control and I have zero expierence in that field, I have a feeling he might try to bully and manipulate me into taking the 18k.

Should I let the fas people know about this?

Yes. Tell them about the shouting as well. This sort of sh|t is not how anyone should be treated.

Feck, I've gone for min wage a few years back ( whe it was about €16,000 a year), and I was treated nicely at the interview.

i would have walked out if anyone started shouting at me at an interview and told them to stick the job.

personally i wouldn't take it either, yeah times are tough for everyone now but could you face going in there every day taking crap off him for minimum wage?

the fact that he is willing to hire someone to do the role of credit control that has no experience is also worrying. I mean no offense to you personally when i say this. I mean it's not what you do so why any manager would hire you for it is crazy. I think the guy wants a general dogs body that he can lump any sort of wok onto and expect it done, scream and shout at you and you'll run away scared and do it for him for minimum wage.

i'd let fas know his game too.
