Ryanair Cabin Baggage - 5cm too big, chance it?

    Hello all,

My preferred bag to bring on a short trip is about 5cm too tall and 3cm too wide when compared with Ryanair's maximum cabin baggage dimensions. Should I chance it? It's Dublin - London Stanstead and I'd be checking in online.

    Thanks

I've not flown Ryanair in a couple of months but don't remember ever having to measure my bag anywhere to see if it's suitable.

    I'd risk it.

I reckon once it fits overhead you'll be fine .. just don't be the last one on who's holding everyone up with the big bag because they couldn't leave that 4th pair of shoes at home :D

I've never been asked to measure my bag but did see them checking in Beauvais last week, doubt there'll be any problem, think the weight would be more important. If you're online checkin you're sorted.

Never seen them bother with it before... until this Monday coming back from Bristol there was a woman stood at the gate beside the bag testing frame and getting a few people to stuff their bags in. I'm pretty sure they cannot take money off you at the gate though so the worst case is they put the bag in the hold and then leave it on the tarmac at the other end like with pushchairs.

was pulled up on this in stansted last year, had a floppy bag with a stiff floor, handle and wheels, it always squashed to fit in to the locker, they made me try to put it in the sizing cage when I was waiting to pass through security, I was told it was too big and that I had to go back to the desk and pay to check it in, was weighing up whether to buy another bag or pay to check it in, but then saw the other security gate hadn't anyone checking and got through ok...

They were doing it again at stansted another occasion, but the woman in front got pulled up and I got to scoot through when she was occupied...

The baggage compartments for ryanair and aerlingus are different sizes, I got a bag that just fits in snugly under the airlingus rules, I have to turning it sideways to fit for ryanair... just make sure you get on early enough to get your bag in first!

Grrr I hate Bristol airport!! Their security staff are the worst ever - they grunt at you and treat you like dirt. Have been through most airports in the UK and Bristol beats them all for rudeness!! Its a shame as I fly back there at least once a month and am already in a bad mood coming up the A38!!

Anyways I always only take hand luggage and never been stopped with it. I would say though make sure you get on to the plane quickly so you can fit it into the overhead bins.

Agreed that Bristol is a pain of an airport to go through, my least favourite is Geneva though. Bristol did seem to be a bit more efficient at getting people through security on Monday morning this week since the last time I passed through there though, part of their problems though is that they have just expanded much much quicker than they ever expected when they built the new terminal building. It had several times more capacity than the old building when they first opened it, but the new building was already too small to cope with the number of flights they have and people passing through as soon as it opened.

If you check-in online you should be ok......I have never seen security stopping anybody due to their size of the suitcase and when you board the plane the staff is way too busy to see the size of your suitcase.

If your case roughly conforms to the size of 55x40x20cm it will be fine.
Ryanair are not so strict on size as they are trying to encourage people to bring cases on board with them, hence they charge for checking in a case.

And as previous posters have said, if you check in online you dont see any one to weigh it anyway.

I would imagine that none of the crew want to be the person who held up the flight because they forced a passenger to check in their baggage. It's quicker to just take it and put it in the hold.

In FKB (Karlsruhe/Baden Baden) security weigh your bag and while they don't check every bag to see if it fits into the airlines hand luggage frame thingy, they check the obvious ones.

It's only a new thing afaik, I fly into FKB a few times a year and Monday was the first time I saw it.

ooo glad I spotted this!! back there start of Dec so will be taking note!! just out of interest was the flight busy or half empty?

was on manchester flight last week and lots of people had bags which were really over the size limit but there wasnt any problems, jst the usual of trying to get them in the overhead lockers and some again had to be put in hold as far as I know.

Funny you said that, I was on a flight from Bristol to Dublin ( I think it was something like 21.40 but it was 30 mins late leaving ) 2 Mondays ago and they stopped a lady in front of me over carrying her handbag as well as another small suitcase. Security staff told her the handbag would have to go into the suitcase but it wouldnt fit. Cue an argument and I went onwards to the plane which was held up for 6-7mins as a result of her discussion at the gate with security. Not sure what happened in the end as I was way down the back of the plane and couldnt see up when she was finally let on.

On another point flying back from Krakow last weekend they had a weighing scales at the gate but they werent using it. Im expecting Ryanair to start using these scales soon ( I saw one lad get on the place with a 65L backpack on his back, he had used online check-in ). Bet you anything they will have a till/visa machine set up at the gate to collect cash off those whose bags are too big/heavy within the next 12 months.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I have a bag that would be 4cm too deep.
Are Ryanair any stricter these days?

Generally yes. In the past 6 months I've flown to Stanstead, Gatwick, Birmingham and Edinburgh with them and bags were being checked in Dublin and in all the other airports. Someone earlier in the thread referred to ducking by when the gate agent was distracted, I've seen the crew on the plane bring someone back to the gate with an oversized bag.

I've decided to just take a smaller, soft bag instead and save myself the stress because it looks like odds are high they won't show mercy.
As long as I keep it from bulging I should be fine.
The 10KG presents a different problem altogether!

I find them strict.they make you put it in a measuring box at the gate, what is the actual size of it,just bring a roll along that fits

The last few times I flew with RA, my bag fit the size criteria, but I was WAY over the 10kg weight one. In most cases, the RA staff came down the queue waiting to board, and passed their hand held size frame thingy over every ones carry on bag. If it fit, you were good to go. They didn't seem to pay all that much attention to the weight of the bags. Boy was I relieved. ! :D

If your bag is overly heavy, don't act as if it is. I think that that can be the key to success. When you are at the gate, and waiting to board, don't display any signs of your bag being too heavy to carry. If you carry your bag on your shoulder, slap a big smile on your face and pretend that the rapidly developing welt on your shoulder really isn't there !;)

Weighing all bags at Luton when I flew home last weekend. Genuinely looked pissed off to see most of them actually within the 10kg weight limit.

I read somewhere they get a measly amount of commission for every bag that does not fit the criteria. Making people miserable for cents.

Taken from website called stackexchange (won't le me post link)

What is the actual (not official) size of the Ryanair “baggage sizer”?

I know that this question could sound a little bit dumb since Ryanair always sends lot of emails specifying the dimensions of the allowed hand luggage but I am not interested in the "formal" answer but in the "informal" one.

In every airport where Ryanair flies there is a blue box (baggage sizer) where you and the airport staff can put your hand luggage to test if it can be accepted on board. What I would like to know is the dimension of that box (which is of course bigger than the allowed size).

I've been a pretty frequent Ryanair flyer (one flight per month) and I always used the same luggage which was ok for the old box even if bigger than the allowed size.

Few weeks ago Ryanair introduced the possibility to bring a second hand luggage on board. In doing so they also changed the dimensions of the blue box which now has two compartments (one for the main hand luggage, still bigger than the allowed size, and one for the small one). My old luggage doesn't fit anymore in the new boxes so I guess I'll have to buy a new one, hence the need to know how far can I go with the size of the luggage.

    Answer

I had the opportunity to check the measures of the Ryanair "baggage sizer" yesterday even though I hadn't a meter with me. My hand luggage fitted almost perfectly so I can say that the size of the baggage sizer is roughly 23 x 43 x 50 (the last measure is probably the least important one since it is open on top).

In the end, you have something like 3 or 4 centimeters more than the allowed size for each measure.
