The seventh running of the Fields of Athenry 10km will take place on the traditional date, the 26th of December 2008 at 11:00am.

The race will be held over the same course as last year starting beside the railway line in Athenry and finishing under the Arch in the middle of the town.

Entries have been flying in for this year's race with around 270 entries on hand at time of writing.

It's worth remembering that we've set a limit of 1,000 entries this year to ensure that we can cater safely for everyone during the event and so if you're sure you'd like to take part in this year's race you should get your entry in ASAP.

Race HQ will be in the sports hall of the Presentation College Athenry.

And entries are coming in thick and fast.

We're not sure yet, but it is becoming possible that no entries will be accepted on the day.

We're almost half full, and most of our pre-entries usually arrive in the next two weeks.

If we hit the 1000 runners mark, we're closing off entries.

So if you're hoping to do this race, best to get in now.

I'll post a last minute warning here again [if I get the chance], if entries are about to close.

    Hi all,

Paul Hession will be in attendance at the prizegiving ceremony for the Fields of Athenry 10km [he won't be stepping up to 10km just yet, no mater what Jerry Kiernan might say].

At least 2 of Kiernan's prodigy's should be in attendance; National Marathon champion Michael O Connor and Sligo's Emmet Dunleavy will take on winner for the last 3 years, Gary Thornton.

Paul MacNamara will make another attempt to take his own local title, in the company of 1000 other runners.

One last thing - could all the boardsies running make their presence known to me - so I can put a face to the virtual name!

Excellent race Alan, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It is evident that people are gagging to get out and run on Stephen's Day and Athenry AC put on a great show and a great course. Love the finish under the arch, also the lavish refreshments afterwards - compliments to the scone cook.

Only minus points are (1) the slow number pickup - though maybe mine just got lost in the Mcs and (2) the odd knucklehead driver barrelling his way through the race from behind. You can't do much about those.

    Well done to all concerned.
