    Hi Folks,

I am looking for advice. Basically I drive a 99 Nissan Micra and am looking to purchase a Volkswagon Golf Sportsline car with possibly under 30000km mileage, black, no more then a couple of years old and 3 doors. This car looks the part.

I am planning to go to into a dealership with about 15000-16000 cash in hand to get the car I want. I was just wondering would I get a couple of grand off a car like the one on the above link if I went in with this cash upfront and was willing to trade in the Micra GX which only has 61000 miles on the clock and is in great running order. I would accept a valuation of abetween 1000-1500 euro on the micra. I know dealers are having difficulties selling cars so I was told January would be a good time to get a deal. How much do you reckon I oulwd be able to get a car like this or similiar to this way. Also if by any chance anyone reading this drove one of these cars before or has one how do you find it. I hear Volkswagon make good reliable cars. Cheers

OP, for what it's worth, you will get more on a straight deal off the price then what that car is worth. They might give you a grand for the car, but if you push it they might give you 1500 off the price on a straight deal. Keep your car, and sell it on. Don't trade it in. If you keep it, either way your should come out better off, and if they mirca doesn't sell, give it to a brother, cousin sister etc. etc.

if you go in looking to trade in, then you will pay full askking price and get shafted on your trade in.

I would say you could get that car for 14,500 cash

You'll have no bother selling a well looked after Micra with that mileage for between €1000 and €1500. They always seem to sell well on adverts.ie. In fact, small cheap cars are about the only thing that will always sell well; when times are tough people are attracted by the low running costs, and there's always a market for learners and little old ladies.

    My advice:

Sell the Micra privately (put a notice in the widow, or put it in the Buy and Sell and adverts.ie, no point playing carzone or autotrader rip-off prices).

Walk into that dealer with 15k in cash with no-trade in and make him an offer. He'll most likely bite your arm off, and if he doesn't you can be guaranteed there will be someone else who will.

Also, to edit. I think the Golf is a lovely looking car, and nice to drive if slow in 1.4 form, but we've been very disappointed with the quality of our 2005 Comfortline MkV (similar to what you're considering). Constantly blowing bulbs, malfunctioning electric windows, and bits of trim falling off the interior. Wouldn't put me off one again, but make sure you get a decent warranty.

On another note, we've two mk5's, one 04 and 05 and no problems(other than a drive shaft snapping, but that was due to wheels spinning stupidity:P). One with 95km's and the other with 70km's. Great cars, good comfort.

Have you checked out the same type of car in the North/UK, with a favourable exchange rate for us at the moment you should save a bit. And cars are not selling there any quicker either so you have the same bargaining chips as bying one this side.
