What is your idea of a decent stereo firstly?

well basically throwing a party and all my music is on the laptop so i was thinking 50 watts per speaker? i'm not really to good on this sort of thing... also recently bought an mp3 player so maybe i would be better buying a stereo with mp3 dock and just using my laptop as my music library?
    hope this doesn't sound daft!

50 Watts per channel is getting into the realm of a stack system amplifier and at full pelt it will get into the neighbours calling up 999 ;) In short, it's too loud!

What audio systems/hi fi units have you got to hand, OP?

And another +1 for the Gigaworks T series - I have the T20s in the bedroom and the T40s in the living room. Great sound, fairly small size and since they are 2.0 systems, no clutter.

depends on the neighbours, I've a system with 200W total and never had 999 called, but I'd say 50 Watts is too much for laptop speakers but thats just opinion I have a set of small creative speakers that I bought years ago for my laptop, work well have great sound quality.

I'd say anything from creative is pretty good.

    You must have deaf neighbours;)

I wish I'd known about the T40s before buying my 2.1 system -- subwoofer + crap flooring == recipe for disaster.
Or constant calls to "turn that down!", anyway.

If it's just for a party then why don't you buy or borrow a proper stereo with an AUX or LINE input on it and use one of these cables???

    +1

Thats what I use, it's great. Do you have a stereo with a aux or line input already?

hi this is about the only time i can reply to the responses.. thanks for the advice... i think i'm probably better off investing in a music system with a ipod dock... any suggestions or pitfalls to watch out for? budget would be about 300 euroicon6.gif

... or if you have a decent stereo already with optical input, or even a stereo input, spend 89 euro on an airport express and wirelessly send your music via AirTunes using iTunes.

It works fantastically for me. Excellent solution I think.

Best Speakers i've ever had. Have them a year and a half and theyre still perfect. Theyre so perfect the design hasn't been changed in years.

    Bass is amazing

And theyre reduced by 35% on Pixmania at the moment.

    Theyre €200 on Apple.ie

Theyre the best and i used to sell speakers.

I vote "small" nearfield studio monitors such as KRK RP5.

    krk_rp5_big.jpg

    Similarly, M-Audio BX5, Event TR5, Samson Rubicons, Alesis M1.

    www.thomann.de

Not as much fun, but "truer" than most consumer speaker systems.

Could always try the Logitech Z-2300s if you're looking at a 2.1 system -- quite nice.
    Absolutely HAMMERING bass, too.
