I'm a lone parent and have applied for lone parent allowance. Does anybody know what the visit from the Social Welfare inspector entails and what sort of questions he/she might ask? Do they have a right to look around my home?
    Thanks for your help.

You would probably be better posting this in state benefits. Afaik its just to check your documents, savings and bills and to establish whether you really are a lone parent. I don't think they'd be going for a tour of your home

They usually will want a tour of the home, to make sure it is up to the standard for a family dwelling and to check that there is someone cohabiting with you.

They do not have permission to look around your home, they have to wait until you invite them inside the front door, and then whatever room you feel comfortable inviting them in. You can keep all the other doors in the house closed.
I have been through this, the inspector will just ask about your childs father, your assets, loans and look for your bank statements etc it should only take bout 20mins tops.

I have had a visit from a welfare inspector for the same reason, the inspector is just assessing you and your financial status. The inspector that called to mine told me that I had to ask her inside as she had no permission to enter without my say so.
The only time they would request a full view of your house would be if any complaints had been set against you eg. having a partner/boyfriend living with you.
She went through my finances/loans etc and requested birth certs, bank statements all that kind of paperwork, if not already submitted to the Social Welfare. :)

write to them before the visit and ask what are your rights. when they call at your door ask for identificationeven if you know them.Lets em see you are the sort to ask questions

And if they ask to check all around your house you will be able to quote from the reply you got. and also ask them under what regulation they ask to look around your house and if you are obliged
