Training Sessions Paid?

    Heya, quick question.

I work in the catering industry, it's a low level job yadda yadda, minimum wage plus tips, it's ok though, I like the crowd I work with etc.

The company organises occasional "training days" for fire safety, manual handling, etc, that take place on our own time, but we aren't paid for it, yet attendance is still "compulsory". I don't know if this is legit or not, but i'm getting a bit sick of spending half my day off in there.
There's another one coming up, again it'll be on one of my days off and again unpaid, yet we have to go. I've been told (by management) that i'm good at my job and they don't want to lose me, but I really don't want to go to this seminar to learn how to smile at people.

So what i'm asking, are they allowed to force me to go to these sessions, or can I be in trouble for refusing to go when i'm not being paid? I'm on 8.65 and being in there any longer than i need to be for no money is getting on my nerves.

also, we don't get sunday pay AT ALL, I don't know what the story with that is either.

    Thanks.
