My money's on "Exclusive urban living with a stylish and contemporary retail experience."

Translation: A skite of tax dodge apartments made to the bare minimum spec and a Spar.

    Lol No.

I was referring to them signs that are on the boarding that surrounds the building site with pictures of different people smiling that have the slogan "He knows.." and "she knows..". i.e. that Citypoint is gonna be cool and it's coming soon. Muck marketing to be honest.

    Also on the website: www.citypoint.ie

http://www.galwaycity.ie/AllServices/Planning/OnlinePlanningEnquirySystem/The city council's online planning tool is good for a snoop but it isn't the most user friendly of things.

Use the map option to find the application number on the site you are interested in and then use that to check the plans.

There are a few plugins to install.

Also each county council has one of these now.

    061032 -
Permission for amendments to proposed mixed-use development approved under Planning Permission Ref. 05/944 as follow: (a) Change of use of hotel to 16 No. apartment, comprising 2 No. one-bedroom and14 No. two-bedroom apartments, on second, third and fourth floor levels; (b) Associated increase in office area of 151 sq.m resulting in a total office area of 2,329 sq.m on first and second floor level; (c) Associated increase in retail area of 322 sq.m resulting in a total retail area of 3,556 sq.m on upper basement, lower ground and upper ground level; (d) Omission of retail passenger lift between lower ground floor level and basement car parking; (e) On street retail delivery area on Bothar na mBan; (f) Relocation of ESB sub-station to upper basement level; (g) Associated minor alterations to elevations
So it was going to be a hotel + office + shop and now is going to be apartments + office + shop

Apparently TK Maxx are the main tenants, someone I know workin in Cuba heard a rumour... Make of it what you will...

It's got something like 4 storeys underground so no wonder it's taken forever to get to the stage it's at. They are waiting to see if they get planning permission to make it taller before they press ahead.

Should make a big improvement to the Prospect Hill area anyway - it's pretty grim at the minute.

Eventually we're going to come face to face with the hard reality that Galway is a medieval city and either knock half of it down or pedestrianise it from the Tuam road to Salthill. Theres a lot to be said for maintaining the character of a place, but theres a whole lot of ugly 1970s construction in there too.

I'm curious, which half of it do you think they should knock down, and why?

We could start with fortifying the Mayo border.

I didn't say we should knock it, just that we'll eventually have to, with the increase in vehicles on the road and the size of the city. Give it fifty years and that's where we'll be. Besides there are a load of dirty looking buildings around and about, that place across the road from the GPO, most of Prospect Hill, etc.

Prehaps should start a thread discussing lack of town planning and what a joke most of the development has been. How the character of the city has been replaced for the most part by ugly buildings..

The county council have done a pretty good job with making the roads around the edge of Galway so dreadful that people from other counties stay at home.

Ah yeah, take the mick out of the Mayo lads.... easy targets, so we are. ;)

Seriously though, what the feck is it with this city? As much as I love the place and the positive side to it, the clowns that run it and make all the major decisions dont deserve the amount of respect we show them. I say respect, because despite numerous very very bad decisions invovling planning and development and waste of public monies, we still let them get on with it. The city council chamber is a complete farce (from the reports I read on it in the local papers), with planning for this years Arts festival big top almost not going though due to an altercation which had been going on for a number of weeks over "Clamping". FFS. There seems to be more political points scoring going on in there than a sign of them all pulling together to deliver what is best for galway.

The same cane be said of the planning and engineering dept in the council,
The Eyre Square redevelopment debacle, the numerous water quality issues (one of which last year caused as a direct result of extremely bad planning in relation to rural dwellings along the corrib), the absolute disgrace that certain roads are around the city in heavily populated areas (Doughiska to name but one), the lack of amenities around the newest of housing areas around town (Doughiska and the estates on the way out the headford road to name two I am aware of), the numerous hotels that have popped up around the city in recent years when there are plainly needs for other developments in more apt locations.
Now I see two other complete hames of things about to come about, the "redevelopment" of the headford road shopping center ( has anyone seen the traffic plans for this, comical in the least), the development of Crown Square, again the traffic managment system to go in here is funny were it not very very bad for traffic in the area.
And all this development, shopping centers, apartments, housing estates, industrial estates etc, with little or NO investment in transport infrastrucure (bar a few bus lanes and a "private" bus station.

This development at this end of Eyre square reeks of similiar issues and tardy thoughtlessness.
Sorry for the rant, but some of the decisions and choices made over the past few years have been nothing short of negligent and they continue to carry on in this manner.

    Kippy
