Collins Barracks (Cork city) transposer, RTE2 now on Ch52 (to replace 49)

Collins Barracks (Cork city) transposer is as of this week transmitting RTE2 on a new UHF channel of Ch52 as well as the existing ch49.

The reason for the move is that Ch 49 is one of the 4 allocated channels for DTT in the area.

I have no news as to when RTE2 on Ch49 will be switched off yet, so for the time being it is simulcasting on both 49 and 52.

    RTE 1 (39), TV3 (46) TG4 (43) remain on the same channels

Thanks for the info. Don't they usually put a permanent written message on the channel a week or so before turning it off?

That message is now there in big blocky writing at the top of the screen.

    What does it say?

It says "Retune now to Ch52. This service closes soon."

It's also only broadcasting sound in Mono just to really encourage you to retune. Retuning to Ch52 and sound is back in Nicam Stereo as normal.

I'd suspect the NICAM being missing is because they only have four encoders there...

Collins Barracks is a relay transmitter and most TV relays do not demodulate and then remodulate the incoming signals. It merely shifts the frequency of each received channel (before amplification for transmission) to simplify matters and reduce costs (so it would not have had NICAM encoders anyway).

However to put a message on screen they have to demodulate and then use a modulator, and the modulator would not have had NICAM capability (very expensive if it had). That would have been why there was no NICAM

Good to see we're not being forgotten about in the DTT transition. Anyone know for sure a date when tests begin?

I'm currently installing an ariel which is pointing directly at Collins Barracks. I am close enough to be able to see that it is pointing directly at it. RTE2, TV3 and TG4 are all perfect quality, but for some reason I can't get a good quality reception for RTE1 :(

Anyone else having this problem with Collins Barracks? Thanks.

    Lines across picture?
    Wavy Picture?
    Noisy(snowy)?
How close to the transmitter are you?
What kind of aerial are you using?
Is it a group B aerial orr wideband?
Do you have the elements vetrical or horizontal?
How close to transmitter are you?
    Anything in line of sight?
have you tried getting Spur Hill instead?
Lots of variables . More info needed to be of any help.
