Or is that in our terms 08/05/09?
Yeah, the second one. 8th May 2008.

Yuy, definitely looking forward to this one. Some strong actors in there too - Urban, Bana and Pegg.

By-the-by, we're 7 posts in on this thread already and there's still not an uber-Trekkie nerd in sight ranting and raving that Spocks ears aren't pointy enough or that Kirk is driving a car or something. Amazing :pac:

    This looks brilliant!!

I'm only going to watch the trailer once though. I hate seeing too much of movies. I'm always sitting there waiting for this part to come up.

screen grab from the 1080p trailer....
Kirk sees the Enterprise fro the first time
    ...the detail is stunning.

    That looks seriously awesome!!!

Sky1 really must start showing TNG again, I miss it:(

Looks great, but I don't think the second trailer matched the strength and darkness of the first. Also the characters seem a little too immature, I don't expect a lot from the Dialogue..

But maybe the trailer is misleading! Fingers crossed for a successful franchise reboot.

awesome, an entire ship run by teenagers.

Wow that looks fantastic. I thought i had clicked on the wrong trailer at the start there.

Looks like a "casino royale" treatment for Star Trek, except it seems they may be heavily rewriting star trek history. Wonder how the trekkies will respond to that?

As someone who grew up watching the original movies(too young for series) this is a travesty - if it ain't broke don't fix it...

You mean the movies aren't need of a rebirth? I think a lot of people (not to mention the box-office takings being the lowest for the final film, 'Nemesis' than for any of the other films in the series) would disagree.. and say it's about time it's gets a reworking.

I think like the Batman series, this re-imagination of the 'Star Trek' series could not do any real harm. If Christopher Nolan has taught us anything, it's that a fading film series can be saved.

Not a trekkie (the occasional - i.e. once a year or so - episode of the brilliant cheesiness that is the original series is about as far as I get) but this does look fun. Action definitely appears to be hyped up a notch. I do think Abrahams is an entertaining director - MI3 was surprisingly enjoyable - so will be good to see how this fares. Curious to see some of the fanboy criticisms that are likely to be around the net hours after release though - should make for some good reading.

Star Trek needs a reboot. It's as simple as that. You cannot make an original TOS movie due to obvious problems, the TNG movies have run their course, and the mainstream public would have zero interest in any DS9/Voyager/Enterprise movie, or indeed a movie with a group of unfamiliar characters.

So the only opton is a reboot of the best known series with a director that knows his stuff. Despite my best attempts to refrain, I have read prety much every spoiler about the film, and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it. There are 5-6 scenes in the trailer alone that I find to be incredible as a Trek fan.

star trek needs to die, it's just that simple.

no reboot, no re imagining, no ****ing teeangers running the ****ing flagship to catch the attention of the hip, younger generation. Just end this ****. This movie is going to be generic ****ty sci fi, it's going to have as much trek about it as Enterprise.

I can't agree - the first 6 films with the old crew were great(even if they were all fat and middle-aged by Undiscovered Country) - the banter between the characters was good. Next Generation Crew didn't translate all that well to the big screen as I don't think there was the same camaraderie between the crew (Picard is a lot stiffer than James T. Kirk)....

The series started dying from Generarations onwards - and now rebooting it, when the old series is still fresh in a lot of peoples minds just stinks of the usual Hollywood-lazy-ideas-need-big-box-office mentality....

Simon Pegg as Scotty FFS? And Sylar as Spock? There's only on man who can play Spock, and he's in retirement...those trailers made me cringe....blasphemy. They should just let Star Trek go....

I cannot understand this type of thinking. So just because the actors are too old (or indeed have passed away), we should not be allowed to enjoy new adventures of Kirk and company?

The new cast have an opportunity to relaunch the series. If it's a bad film, well all least someone gave it a shot. But if it's a great film, then Star Trek will be reborn in manner that will bring a new generation of fans to the franchise and Trek will, to coin a phrase, "live long and prosper". :p

Edit: And personally, I think Quinto has Spock down to a tee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 661 ✭✭✭thewing

For me William Shatner IS James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy IS Spock, DeForest Kelley is Bones....I can't imagine anyone else as these characters...even if meant to be younger...I think this will be as well received as Enterprise....or maybe i'm too old and stuck in my ways....

I'd consider myself a trekkie and while I had serious concerns for this film the trailer has really got me excited. It looks like JJ has got it spot on. I can understand the misgivings about rebooting the franchise with a complete reworking of the original series' back story but in fairness the franchise needed rebooting and while I would have preferred a new story with a new ship and new characters (the odd old one thrown in of course) JJ looks like he's threaded that fine line between ruining the series and rebooting it pretty well - of course this is only a trailer so a lot is to be seen yet!

The routine that the last few films got themselves into was tired and needed ditching. All that said I'd love a DS9 film some day - JJ are you listening!?!?!?

ps: Uhuru is looking quite well if I do say so myself!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Yeah she is that one from "The Terminal" (I thought Tom Hanks was good and it is one of those guilty pleasure movies if not just a tad too sugar coated).

I wouldn't mind opening hailing frequencies with her, am i right?

I should confess now I used to be a major trek fan, I still watch first contact when I can. Have been watching DS9 season 7 on virgin and yes, a DS9 movie would have been great except they pretty much wrapped up everything in the last episode.

I think it was important they injected new life into this franchise, the same old Frakes/Berman endeavours (woops, nearly said enterprises!) were more like a "lets get the old cast together and have a bit of fun, feck the audience".

That shot of the enterprise being built on earth looks a bit weird, should be in spacedock

Would the mainsteam public even care if its new charactors or old ones?
As a scifan fan and a trekie its been years, it would be nice for a little advance on the overall story instead of a prequil/revamp?

I just watched the trailer (trailer 2) That looks ****ing woefull i mean id start listing what pissed me off but i think ill wait till its out to do that.

I hope i am wrong i hope this will be good but if its anyhting like that trailer we can only hope it crashes and burns, i would hate if this movie was bad but still somehow led to several more movies following it. Fingers crossed but i think ill avoid spoilers and trailers from here on in,

i actually stopped watching that trailer shortly before the end of it i felt like my temples where going to explode

    EDIT:

It does not need to die, just new crew/cast/location and maybe time but about 10 years after nemesis might be nice

    Won't argue there.

I think they would, and I think that the recasting of TOS is the reason that JJ et al. will successfully relaunch the franchise. Trek in general is seen as "a nerds thing" but the characters of Kirk, Spock and crew are iconic and very well known.

I'd consider myself to be a big Trek fan for about 20 years, but for me, any advancements made on the story (set after TNG movies) need to be set on the small screen, where the concept can be properly fleshed out.

Honestly, and I am not trying to be argumentative in any way, but I'd like to hear why you hated the trailer so much? I'll give you my top 3 moments...
    1) Kirk looking at the Enterprise for the first time, which is probably what made up his mind to join Starfleet.

    2) The Enterprise going to warp. Stunning effects.

    3) Uhura Spock transporting to Vulcan with the planet being ripped apart in the background.

I dunno if it's just me, but the trailer gave off 'Starship Troopers' vibes....which is very much not the road I'd want a 'Trek movie to go down...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,661 ✭✭✭savemejebus

got more of a serenity vibe from it myself,
especially the battle scenes above the planet

Looks absolutly stunning. The cam version had me on the edge of my seat with excitement but the HD one had me on the floor convulsing with hapiness. Shame it's so far away.

*Races off to watch original Star Trek on HD DVD.

Which ones more hardcore trekkies or trekkers?:pac:

It looks visually outstanding and great to see
Kirk and Spock initially at odds, something always told me that they were two personalities that needed some time to mesh!:D

Looks great. Going by the trailer they've managed to keep the 'essence' of Star Trek while bringing it into the new millenium. I also think that a reboot was the only viable option financially, as the spin-off TV shows had diluted Star Trek beyond recognition and continuing on in that path would only appeal to the hardcore fans, which have been dwindling in numbers.

I'm sure the movie will be fun but I am concerned that it will be typical JJ Abrams fare - very flash, but lacking substance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

its very pretty looking i'll give it that but its undeniable the bloke playing kirk is too young looking. its like he's walked off the set of one of those interminable series like one tree hill.

im not a trekkie and to be honest the only reason i'll probably go see this is its a sci fi film and i love them and one of me best mates is a trekkie fan and has practically booked the tickets already

if im honsest im much more excited about transformers two.

still pegg and quintro are brilliant and while the internal of the ship is enough to give you snowblindness the general look of everything else is gorgeous. iowa looks just like ya think it would in blade runner :)

    should be fun.

Something they filmed back in the early days of TNG for Gene Rodenberry's birthday, IIRC.

Or maybe they were really scrapping the bottom of the barrel for plots in season 7.
