The mid-'80s was a terrible time for chart music.

    Kinda disagree.

The last 20 years have been pretty terrible for chart music. Its just been britpop and manafactured boy and girl bands, to my ears anyway. The mid 80s were pretty exciting, just coming off the end of the new romantic and new wave phase, the first strains of house were hitting our ears, bands were coming out and singing about political issues whether it was homosexuality in small town England or freeing Nelson Mandela or even that they were just a statistical remainder of a world that doesn't care, artists were getting more and more experimental with electronic and dance and bands like Depeche Mode were hitting their prime.

Have to agree with Conor74 on that. While there might have been a lot of garbage in the 80's, there were lots of brilliant artists too. For me Depeche Mode are one of the most influential bands of all time. Plus you had bands like The Smiths, Joy Division, The Stone Roses and the Acid House influx. A lot of quality in that era.
