I'll be in the queue to buy those shades with the interchangable lens. I swear, they are as good as Oakleys, and at a fiver a go, you don't care if you lose or break them.

Curious as to what makes this one for boarding but this one for skiing. :D

a euro cheaper or a euro more expensive depending on your point of view?

Why is one jacket advertised as a ski jacket and the other as a snowboard jackets (ladies?

Boarding stuff is usually a bit looser in cut and often longer in the body, to allow for sitting on snow. Often funkier designs, but that's a detail.

Has anyone bought goggles in Lidl before and if so are they any good? Thinking of getting a pair this time.

A few friends bought Aldi goggles last year (yes I am aware that that's not Lidl) and they weren't the best. The orange lenses actually made it brighter! And they fogged up pretty easy too.

i fell fowl of those goggles too, nothing worse than being on a slope with crap goggles (well dont get me started about crap bindings!) - got a set of Smith goggles over there for about $50 or so. Personally would agree with Eileen, glasses would be good, but for goggles no

thanks Eileen. I do have a vague recollection of snow boarders telling me they were just generally cooler when skiiing last year :)

If falling over on your arse a lot is the definition of "coolness" then yes. ;)

Picked up a mens snowboard top (very impressed!), a fleece and socks this morning. Pensioner city. Wrapping up for the Christmasss...

Ah but that's only when learning.

Once you grasp it, it is infinitely cooler. Skiing is still hampered by the one piece leotard image and the older generation who think there sport is more pure or some nonsence.

    Boarding ftw!! :D

P.S. I in no way intend this to be an off topic board v. ski war, just venturing my opinion.

Back on Topic, I forgot all about today. I'll wander over to Carlow and have a look later. Might get some socks. :)

I got a pair of the orange lense goggles from Lidl last year & they worked perfectly. I use sunglasses most of the time but when i needed them they were excellent, quite comfortable & no fogging up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭Don1

Fair enough. Seem to me like a dentist's UV filter but no good for glare, but I didn't have them on for more than four seconds! Still recommend as good lenses, be it goggles or sunnies, as you can afford. Same as any gear tbh. Makes a noticeable difference. Snowblindness is never fun. ;)

Having had laser done on the eyes, I have good sunnies anyway so will be wearing them for most of the time. Didnt want to spend too much on goggles as I borrowed a pair of oakleys last year and they fogged up (they were expensive ones too). I bought the Lidl goggles this morning anyway, along with the snowboard top and socks. Cheap as chips so I'm not complaining:D

If the goggles aren't looked after and cleaned properly (and retreated with anti-fog) it doesn't matter how expensive they are imo, they will start to fog up. That's what I have found anyway. Just they are less likely to if they are decent, and maintained.

I'm convinced Oakleys are way over-rated. I've had Oakley shades and goggles, and had trouble with both. The shades broke when I put a pair of gloves on top of them, and I had no luck getting them replaced. I'm quite happy to stick with Lidl or Aldi stuff.

Your throwing yourself down a mountain at great speed, expect things to break or get damaged, therefore I tend to take cheaper things with me and replace them when needed.

I face planted at very high speed wearing my Oakley sunnies and they were fine after it. My nose and neck were worse off. :)

I bought a pair of cheap snowboarding goggles when i was in Queenstown, for about $5 and they didnt fog up and were great for keeping the glage out.
Served me well and they still do.

Slightly OT but might be skiing in US this Christmas with family and I was wondering is it cheap enough to rent clothes over there for skiing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,775 ✭✭✭EileenG

A couple of places like Great Outdoors do hire ski clothes but most places don't, particularly over in ski resorts. Skis and boots and snowboards and helmets, yes, they are all easy to hire, actual clothes, no.

Your best bet is to ring round your friends and see what you can borrow. You'd be surprized how much stuff you can scrounge. Also, keep an eye on Aldi and Lidl, they both do good quality ski clothes for children for half the price of anywhere else. TK Maxx is handy. You can buy ski socks in Penneys, and other bits and pieces in high street shops.

In Queenstown it was very easy to rent gear. At least that's what it seemed like to me with tons of people in rental clothes.......

Dunno about America though. I'm sure you could pick up outlet stuff over there for half nothing and if twas worth it post it back?

Have an old LIDL jacket which I've gotten 3 trips out of and is now in bits at the zips/elastics/etc, so decided to return for the latest model.

Took a jacket out of the plastic in LIDL the other day and decided to test out the zips and elastics, one quite gentle tug on the elastic to tighen the bottom of the jacket and it fell apart in my hand!

Still though for 40 quid or so what do you expect....

I'd strongly advise against the goggles, they scratch real easy. Lot of people bad mouthing the Oakley ones, i've had about 6pairs over the last 10 years and i've never had a problem with them, they're awesome.

Friend of mine bought the lidl snow board, bindindgs broke in kilternan after about 15mins, awful.

I think you said it all there!!

I'm not slagging off oakleys, but they are pretty much the most expensive goggles, you can pick up some dragons from ebay for 1/2 the price.

Ha ha, well i still have all 6 pairs, i just like to get fancy new ones every now and then. They are the best though, and there ruddy indestructa:Pble
