A compressor pedal levels out the overall volume when you are playing. It makes your soft picking louder and limits the intensity of your volume when you start digging in... The compressor pedal is a good way to add sustain in situations also, you could use some compressors (or volume boost pedals) to increase your preamp volume going into your amp from the guitar.

The boss compressor/sustainer is alright, dont really use them much myself tbh...

mxr dynacomp. cheap and quite good.

best thing about it is theres only two knobs, a lot of parameters like attack/release etc are fixed so theres not so much to worry about. i think its a good idea to live without the extra controls until you realise what they are and need to have control over them.

Go to my profile on Adverts, I'm selling one. Based on the MXR Dynacomp/Ross circuit. I have even posted a link to a youtube clip which illustrates nicely what it does.

This exact same topic came up about a month ago, you should have a search for it.
