Yeah, I was reading about that here, back in September.
Without specifics, it's hard to comment, but it would make sports photography a very different ball game.

There's a thread on the new model back a page or two... Check that bad boy out.

Actually, check out their stills on the website. Fantastic stuff.

Its not going to be cheap though, even by big business pro standards.

It will be cheaper in the end - you don't have to buy special lenses, therefore you are going to save quite a lot. Not to mention reduction of equipment, battery and accessory types.
I must say that I'd be happy working for company that would use such HW. IT completely breaks down all borders between still photography and video production. And I think that 5D MkII is very good example of the further orientation of the whole visual (art) industry. Increasing of the bandwidth, e-ink papers, maybe even some reliable and affordable e-books opened to most file types, HDTV, digital TV broadcasting...
That all is about to combine both still and animated visual information. I think that we are going to be very surprised in few years time what development is about to happen and what direction will be taken as the major business-customer demand.

I dont think it will be cheaper. In addition by the time it becomes available digital cameras / film scanners will have become better and cheaper. Also $17K is a bit steep.

    I beg to differ.

Stills and capturing the moving image are two completely different skill-sets and just because you may be good at one doesn't necessarily mean you'll have any talent at the other. Capturing the moving image is all about balance, anticipation, physical dexterity, a low centre of gravity and stamina, none of which I particularly have although I'm a reasonable photographer. Think Marcus Horan in ballet pumps.

    ;)

I do agree with that, absolutely. But if you have a company doing both, you can save money on equipment by buying one that is capable of both tasks.

any idea about size with this? there is a certain application that this type of camera could be very very good for if its not massive

    Don't think that's correct.
An advert could be filmed for TV, with high res stills grabbed for print.
    Sport is another example.
Also, a wedding could be videoed and offer stills, from the same camera.

I love the whole concept of Red, their product line and ambitions, but I think what's more important is what they mean for for more "lay person" level video and still work. Still, this looks fuppin awesome.
