Which Tape To Seal Insulation

    Hi

I have spent the last few days installing rafterloc between the joists in my dormer and have been using aluminium foil/duct tape to seal any joins.

The local builders merchant ran out of tape and when they spoke to the rep, the rep thought that this tape should not be used for this purpose.

Im interested in what tape people have been using to seal any joins between boards.

After the boards are sealed, a proper airtight membrane will be installed.

Any help is appreciated - thanks.

I'd tape the joints in the airtight vapour barrier. If this is done correctly then joints between insulation boards above won't be an issue.

The Rep probably feels that its a waste of time as the timber rafters will expand at a different rate to the insulation. Certain tapes may also loose their stickiness over time!

    Hi

I understand your point but in my case, the joists have been up for 4 years (which should hopefully reduce any new shrinking) and my thinking is that any extra benefit I can get from sealing the joins can only be a benefit (since its only my own labour being used).

So own up everyone, what tape did you use (even if its only celotape:) )

    Cheers

Fair point but I'm referring to timber always expanding and contracting at a different speed and amount than insulation boards! Timber is a biological material and it moves all the time.

Aluminium tape to tape joints in foil backed xtratherm wouldn't do any harm.
Time would be better spent sealing and installing a good quality vapour barrier - airtight preferred.

One of the benefits of a self build is you get to decide. You also have the opertunity to improve joints in materials and do the best possible at the time.

    Good luck:)
