The trial programme that was installed on my computer has now finished and I need to buy the full application. Where's the cheapest place to buy or where I can get a student discount?

    Thank you!

Pc World are doing it for €139.99, if you go in and ask them to price match it with the likes of Harvey Norman then they will plus you get 10% extra :).

Guys, the OP asked for places to buy Office, not recommendations for alternatives.

Yeah cheers lads for all the replies. I went with Head's suggestion and bought it at softwareforstudents. This was before dabs.ie was posted. :(

True. But if I didn't know about open office and someone told me about it when I was looking to pay for MS I'd be delighted. They werent bad mouthing MS or doing anything fanboy-esque.
Sharing info about good open source software without mocking the OP is surely a good thing?

    I beg to differ.

Every ms office thread in here gets ruined by the open office brigade.

Ah I see I dont read that many of them. Fair enough so. I was basing it on my experience when learning to use computers where people offered alternatives that I wouldnt have found. Especially when I was a student and needed beer money :D

Off topic, personally I dont see the point obsessing one suite is the only one etc. Where I prefer open office I can see how people being taught subjects that require an office suite and the teacher is using MS (most likely) that it can be easier to know exactly how to do what is required of them instead of having to "translate" the instructions to Open Office's way of doing things.

    Sorry for the rant :)

If you've a problem then report the posts. A lot of people don't know there's a free alternative so suggesting it is perfectly reasonable. Can you point out exactly where the thread was "ruined by the open office brigade"? The only person slagging anyone here is you.

[edit]Just noticed that Aidan was the first quote - I stand by my comments. Suggesting alternatives - particularly to someone tight for cash (ie a student) is perfectly reasonable.

Depends which version. Proffessional Plus at €83 has a lot more than what Dabs were offering for €75.

    6) Unhelpful comments

Unhelpful comments (e.g. "switch to linux" when encountering a windows problem) will result in a one day ban.
I was willing to offer a friendly warning first. When "where to buy" is the question, "get something else" is not helpful.

Wait a minute - suggesting OO.o is not the same as saying "switch to Linux". OO is a fully compatible Windows program not a completely different Operating System. Like I said earlier I don't see the problem with suggesting an alternative that would save someone money without loss of functionality - particularly when people may not be aware that there is an alternative.

If you knew someone who was about to buy a TV for €500 and you happened to know that a different make of TV was being given away on Adverts for nothing - would it be unhelpful to point it out?

I'll take this to PM if you like - I'm not trying to start a flame war here - but I genuinely don't see the issue.

If it is a fully compatible windows program as you say, why do more businesses not use it?

Because it requires re-training their staff how to do things the open office way, which costs money? This is starting to sink into a flame war though...

As Ive said before both packages have there advantages. Price on one side against having to "translate" how to do something being taught in MS Suite to Open Office suite's way of doing things.
Also you could go into the writing macro issue with vb etc...

I don't see the harm in making someone aware of a free alternative, on the chance that they weren't aware of it and would appreciate it. Im sure the OP didnt get offended by their suggestions (knowledge is power etc). After all, all they need to say is that they're aware of it but would prefer to buy the package they're after.

Maybe it could be solved by saying "you can get x here for €xx but I would also suggest looking into x as a free alternative if you havent heard of it"

Okay so I got the application in the post today. It came in two discs. One Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 (MS Communicator '07) and the actual microsoft office professional plus 2007 disc. The application won't run for me. How come? Any ideas????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,250 ✭✭✭pixbyjohn

What happens when you put the disc in the drive? Try right clicking on it and explore, then run setup. Are you using Vista? look in the bottom taskbar and see is it looking for permission to run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

yeah I've done all that. And when I click to continue, a loud noise comes from the drive and then nothing happens.

The microsoft office communicator 2007 installed fine.

Probably stating the obvious here, but have you checked your system specs?

Tis grand, I got it installed! I dunno, dodgy disk or something. Installed after restarting and trying 6 times. Phew, can get cracking on my assignments. :)

I appears that the situation regarding the OP has now been resolved. Perhaps it would be an idea to close this thread or put it to bed in some way seeing as it has turned into something other than what the OP was intending and gotten a bit out off track?

Just an idea, no point in flogging a dead horse, or whatever it is they say, whoever they are..

Do you actually doubt weather it's a "fully compatible windows program"? It wouldn't even run if it wasn't fully compatible with windows.

And why do businesses not use it? A stable Open Office was released years after Microsoft had already gotten a foothold into the market with a fully developed product. The fact that nearly all businesses run Microsoft’s operating systems means if feels more natural for them to also buy Microsoft’s applications. The power of advertising, lack of knowledge by a companies IT department, lack of trust in anything free. A whole range of reasons.

The suggestion that nobody should mention OO as an alternative is stupid.

This has run its course, the OP has what she wanted.
