A buddy of mine (American) is interested in coming over here on an extended holiday. Maybe for a couple of months or the max allowed time. He wants to bring over one or two of his guns (Hunting guns not automatics or anything like that) and maybe do some deer hunting and the like. Is there a process for this or is it just not allowed?

There is a process and it's not massively different from the one used by Irish people. He'll need a firearms certificate for his rifles (apply to the Garda Superintendent of the district where he'll be staying while he's here) and a deer hunting license (apply to the National Parks & Wildlife Service).

He should start the process as soon as possible. It could take quite a long time (weeks or months) for the processing of the firearms certificate.

EDIT: For the deer hunting license he'll need permission from the owners of the land he's going to shoot on.
