There are no secret locations, just willingness to get out of car and walk. And to get up early in the morning :-)

The winter season is here which means 'shorter daylight hours' for what ur wanting to shoot....:((landscape,mountains,rivers,waterfalls,seascapes,forests)

The Secret is not the place, but the time......Early morning..Yaaaaawn!

I've been trying to scout out some local locations. Far away fields don't always have to be greener.

Just go south to the coast, keep the sea in your left window and look for sign posts and check your map. That is exactly my plan for winter break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 802 ✭✭✭l pearse

I'm going to scan Killarney National Park after Stephen's day...Just to get out of the city.....If you see a crazy Dub. Chasing down a Red deer or Skybound Eagle.......It's ME!!!!!!!

If you are ever near Kilkenny make sure and visit the castle. There is a wealth of photographic opportunities around here. :)

I would also suggest you try Mahon Falls in Carrick On-Suir in County Waterford/County Tipperary.

Actually have the entire weekend off for the first time in an age so am hoping to get away taking photos somewhere.

Have a competition in my camera club with the title 'rain, rein and reign' and was hoping to get some pictures for it tomorrow. I'm open to locations, ideas or anything at all. Living in Thurles so would eb willing to travel within a 40 or 50 mile radius!

    Thanks!

the lighthouse & Poolbeg in Sandymount is a pretty decent location for different types of shots...

anyone good location in Dublin city centre for a HDR shot... haven't tried HDR before & trying to think where would be a good location!

There's no such thing as a good location for a HDR shot so I wouldn't bother.

I find the Bray Cliff Walk to be a great place for shooting, as well as Glendalough.

I'll go out on a limb here and say there's plenty of good locations for HDR shots e.g. Trey Ratcliffe on Stuck in Customs has some spectacular photos both urban and outdoor/landscape.

If you mix HDR processing in with the original shots in can look good but when over-processed it does look terrible...anyways, my two cents on a subject that could be debated forever!

Re. the original post. Loop Head in Clare is a great location for photos. Heading down there myself next weekend.

Outside is pretty good. Inside is fine too, but sometimes you want more lights then you have. :)

Forests suit HDR IMO, there can be a huge difference in light and dark which can be hard to pick up normally.

Does anyone know how to access the boat house in Carton House? Hoping to get down there for a dawn shot soon. Do I drive into the hotel grounds and park there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,760 ✭✭✭Effects

You just drive right up to the boat house. Just make sure you keep your car out of shot behind the boat house. lol

The honest answer is that it's private and they don't allow access anymore I think.

I took some photos early in the morning when we had the last snow but there was 2 bulldozers in the shot. They are getting ready for the Irish Open.

There is/was a 'thingy' here where people could post locations on a map. Don't know if it ever really took off.

As others said 'everywhere is a good locaiton'. Around Westport, nice landscapes & view of Croagh Patrick, you're in Tipp; Rock of Cashel etc., a lot of obvious places.

Just go anywhere (hil/mountain, river walk etc. and bring your camera). Stop in any town and walk around (Galway- Eyre Sq, down Shop Street, down to the docks, Spanish Arch etc.). You'll find stuff to photograph everywhere really.

if you're going somewhere with work have a search on Flickr, Google etc. beforehand and see what are the standout/most common shot things.

have a look at the link below, outlines some nice places to go. Not to go on the course itself though, cost several thousand euros!

Though in fairness it's probably a blessing in disguise. I think the world will survive without yet another picture of the carton boat house.

Worth going to hook head lighthouse for some shots in the stormy weather today??

Its not a particularly good question to ask for "good photography spots". Sure, if you see a photo you like its cool to ask where it was taken, but unless you have something specific in mind, the question is way open.

If im into macros of insects then my front garden or behind the sink in my bathroom are awesome photography spots.
If i like animals then the zoo, sea, mountains etc are all great places.
If i like urban decan style, then tumbledown old factory buildings is what il recommend.

    see my point?

Best advice is take your camera and go for a drive/walk and see what inspires you.
If your away in a particular location for a day out, holiday, then use that area, take pictures of things there. simples.

Fret wimp - I work in Naas. No matter what camera, or where I could possibly walk to would inspire me in Naas

Yes its subjective, and there are different catagories, but there are plenty of great recognisable spots in Ireland. I really like the broad open questions like this. Glendalough is fantastic, and I never would have heard of Hook Lighthouse before. Cheers guys

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 Cookie P74

Yep, nothing wrong with a broad question.

Bought a great book of landscape photography of Ireland by Peter Cox a few weeks ago and its great for inspiration and locations and well worth a purchase or flick through. They have it in Easons on O'Connell Street and have also seen it there in Blanchardstown as well.

Additional location to recommend is Lough Dan in Wicklow, there's a trail not too far from the scouts center. Its an easy walk and after about 20 mins on the trail you'll come across some ruins of old houses plus the lough and a very nice glacial valley to photograph.

sorry, dont buy that for a second. to sound extreemly corny, you have a camera and can take a picture of Anything around you. You are only limited by your creativity and imagination.

Last day off with the flu I ended up taking this after spending some time playing with clipart and my pocket cam:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/schmintan/8338249773/in/photostream

I also spent an evening playing with models in the house, and that weekend went out into the garden with them, see this set:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/schmintan/sets/72157629155332042/

Another evening i got home late from work and couldnt be bothered studying, i started playing with some toy rubber duck's and ended up with this:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/schmintan/8403018054/in/photostream

Last time i bored in the shopping center i went for a walk around the toy shop and ended up posing a bunch of soft toys for this pic:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/schmintan/8648092118/in/photostream

All spontaneous things that just grew out of playing around with the camera, adn having some fun. I have other photos of bokeh lights out a rainy window, im playing around with trying to get some emotion it using just my hand pressed against the window and some artsy black and white conversion, from the living room.

Im not saying im great, far from it, im highly critical of all the photos that i take, but the fact is that I take photos and i have great fun doing it. I never go anywhere without at least my pocket camera and i experiment and play with ideas.

To say there is nothing nice to photograph around me is just nonsense.

If your looking for something specific like nice wild landscapes or seascapes or something, then sure, you might not find them in Nass, but a bit of a weekend drive to where you know there are mountains, trees, coastline will remedy that. then just get the camera out and take lots of pictures.

**Didnt add the actual images, just the links as i dont want the post to be horribly long.

ST Catherines park. It has entrances in Lucan and Leixlip. This park has the Liffey running trough it and a steep wooded hill. Best of both worlds8607909748_e27ee241cc.jpg

This is the Liffey running trough the park. There are more shots on my flickr page. http://www.flickr.com/photos/94174465@N05/ its well worth a trip.

Naas can be a bit limiting but there are good spots there if you prepared to walk. Well . I think so anyways. Might not be up to the standard on here for subject, but for i like the place at times. And we do have Mondello for the best race motorsport in the country.

Take the drive from Westport to Kylemore Abbey if you have time. Stunning scenes to be photographed along the way.

What type of spot interests you? Will you have access to a car?

Plenty of nice shots within the town from along the river to The Clock and Octagon.

Westport house is worth a visit.

If you're driving you can head back to Murrisk to Croagh Patrick and the famine ship.

If you want a longer drive keep going back to Louisburgh, Leenaune, over the mountains to Finney, Tourmakeady then back to Westport.

Would there be any way to find out where the old mills where? There's 3 near me, all ruins but they always have a river next to them, often man made pools for managing water.

They cover a good few subjects from water to ruins to landscapes.
