Are there any clean engines available or in the pipeline for mercedes. BMW & Audi now have 5 series & A6 in the B band whereas the best E class I know of is D band (220cdi)
There appear to be very good prices for 2008 E 220cdi & E 280cdi in the uk and currently work out cheap at 24% vrt for the 220 cdi and not sure of the vrt rate for the 280 cdi but even at 32% or so, they are still cheaper than here.
I know there is a new E class coming in the next year or two but 2008 280cdi sport is a class car.

Most of the cleaner "BlueEFFICIENCY" models won't make it to RHD. The C180, C200 CDI, C350 CGI are all available in BlueEFFICIENCY models in LHD but MB have no plans to make these available for RHD markets, even though Ireland and the UK have taxation systems that would reward these cleaner models.

Same story for A and B class BlueEFFICIENCY models.

The S400 BlueHybrid is now on sale in LHD, but, you've guessed it, RHD markets will have to wait until 2010 at the earliest.

No GLK in RHD either(and hopefully we won't get it either), and no sign of the S320 CDI BlueEfficiency making it our way either.

No Bluetec models making it to RHD either(what a surprise:rolleyes:).

Given that the S320 CDI matches it for mpg, one would question the need for it but because the S400 BlueHybrid is petrol rather than diesel, the CO2 is lower and it is lower enough to be in 28% VRT, which would put it in a lower VRT band than any other luxury saloon, even the 39 mpg 730d doesn't get under 191 g/km like this car does.

The W211 E220 CDI is in VRT band D with a manual box(now who wants a manual Merc?), and with the option that every Merc buyer requires, a slush box, it is in band E. You can have a 530i, yes you read that correctly with a mannual or automatic gearbox, and that with its 3.0 litre straight 6 petrol is in the exact same VRT band as a 2.2 4 cylinder turbo diesel. Or if you like diesel you could have the 535d in the exact same band E too.

Now I know which one I'd rather there anyway.

The only clean Merc that is definately coming our way is the C250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY.

204 bhp, 369 lb ft AND CO2 of 138 g/km is unrivalled in this category.

I don't like diesel, but I must admit I'd love to know how they managed to do this.

This engine effectively replaces the 280 CDI model. There will be E200 CDI, E220 CDI, E250 CDI and E320 CDI as the options on the paraffin stove front.

The next E-class will finally have direct injection petrols as standard, and fortunately only the entry petrol will have 4 cylinders(the E200K), and the E250 CGI, and E300 CGI will still retain the 6 cylinders thank God(any more carisma free 4 pots would be terrible).
