Buying home weight equipment?

So my severely unemployed buddy's birthday is coming up. As a result of his aforementioned unemployment, he can't renew his gym membership. Was thinking about getting him the weights he's been complaining intensely about no longer having access to for his birthday, maybe splitting the cost with his girlfriend if it's pricey. They have a spare room in their apartment that he's been talking about turning into a weights room for a good two years now, so it'd be a pretty decent gift to give.

Unfortunately, however, I have no idea what to buy or where to buy it from. Any suggestions? Presumably I'd be getting a barbell or maybe a set of dumbells but, as you may have gleamed, the world of fitness is weird and scary to me. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Irishlifting.com

In my infinite wisdom I do not know how to embed a link.I'd reccomend getting him the 140kg olympic barbell set.

As I mentioned, he's been chatting about setting up a weights room in his place for quite some time, this is just an opportune moment to spring it on him.

    I second that.

If your buddy is unemployed it means he is probably spending a lot of time at home already. What he needs at a time like this is opportunities to get out into the world and meet people and keep in contact with the real world.

Fair play for trying to cheer him up though.

I'm not sure "I was going to get you something but instead I'm taking your TV so you can go outside and make contact with the real world" will do for a birthday.

A couple of hundred. Not particularly limited if his girlfriend goes in on it with me, just nothing ludicrous.

You don't have to pawn his tv ... yet.

I mean renew his gym membership to get him out of the house.

Just a note - our neighbors have set of weights at home and I must tell you that such noise and house shaking is just unbelievable. We had to complain on regular basis and we have at least set the time when it does not disturb us so much. It was spilling the tea from a cup that was standing on a table in the middle of our living room. Therefore I would recommend not having something like that at home for your own sake. And if you are not living in the lonely house in the middle of the forest, for your neighbors sake too.
And of course, the more social contact he has, the better for all of you.

I was just thinking that - the OP said his pal lives in an apartment, presumably surrounded by other apartments?? The noise caused from the use of freeweights of up to 140kg would be fierce, surely??

Yeah think public pay as you go gyms. Or tell him to go join a sports club and use their facilities muahahahahahaha

That way you get to buy him a scaldy DVD for his birthday and buy a new hat for yourself.

Hmm, I hadn't considered the noise thing. His apartment has two stories, and the weights would be going in the room upstairs, which is sort of tacked on the roof and has no other apartments surrounding it. There are no adjascent neighbours on the roof and directly downstairs are their other rooms. Would they be loud enough to still bother other neighbours?

Also note that I'm still looking for suggestions as to where to buy such gear.

Depends on how he uses them. I have free weights and make little or no noise at all. Only thing I could think of making a noise is deadlifting, and I have pillows & blankets to cushion them.

Check Adverts here, such junk is there on regular basis. And not only noise, but also the shockwaves (vibrations) from laying the weights down. It is unavoidable. Just realise somebody putting down bucket filled with coal above your head, for few hours a day. I would really suggest considering such idea.
If you had a garage (like in American Beauty), that would be different question.
