    Hey all,

There is a pattern on ebay but the final product isnt that great :( There are few other knitted ones that look great but there are no paterns for them....

Anyone have any ideas or pattens I could adapt??

Can you crochet? There are loads of crochet patterns you could adapt. Amigurumi is a japanese style of crochet, its mostly toys, if you did a search for that, you'd come up with something. I have written a crochet pattern for Sachboy/girl, but theres lots of copyright issues involved. I've tried getting in touch with Media Molecule about giving the pattern away for free but they havent said a definate yes or no, just that that they would look into it. I'm not brave enough to face the Wrath of Sony!!

MM have now told me it is not OK to sell or give away patterns of Sackboy. I was hoping they would turn a blind eye if you gave it away for free. So, I wouldnt buy a pattern from someone, just incase there is some Legal argie bargie.

However there is a pattern for knitting Sackboy in the Issue 49 (current Issue) of Simply Knitting. You can get this in Easons, I just got one this morning. A bit expensive at €7.50. But worth it if you have a fan that wants a Sackboy...This is a Sony approved pattern, MM plan to release a knitting (and hopefully crochet) pattern of their own soon.

If anyone is still interested, I have found this free pattern to knit Sackboy. It's from Simply Knitting magazine issue 49. The Sun UK has posted the pattern from the magazine.

    Have fun making him.

MM has told you that it's not ok because they have their own range of sackboys coming out. The koreans are already receiving official sackboys with their games. Look at this pic

I'm not sure why you would BUY the pattern when Alan Dart is giving it away for free? I had seen someone on Ebay selling just the pattern of Sackboy that had been cut out from the Simply Knitting magazine and was selling it. I emailed Alan Dart directly about it, and he told me it is totally legal for that person to sell the pattern, but what is illegal, is to sell a photocopied version of the pattern. In addition, a magazine, nor a well-known pattern designer would produce or sell such patterns if they didn't have permission from the company to do so. Simply Knitting would have bought a license to sell the pattern and Alan Dart owns the copyright to the instructions. If you need more info please check out Alan's website http://www.alandart.co.uk/pages/faq or email Simply Knitting directly to ask them. His version is totally legal, although there may be others that are not.

If I buy the Simply Knitting magazine and decide to give it away to someone, that is totally allowed, why wouldn't it be?

    Hope this helps,
    Charlotte

The pattern was for sale in Simply Knitting about a month before the Sun decided to give it away for free..Sony and Simply Knitting commissioned Alan Dart to do the pattern. Media Molecule didnt know about the Alan Dart pattern until the day before it came out, and were a little miffed that Sony went ahead with it, without telling them.

I was in touch with MM at the time, because people kept asking me for the pattern to my crocheted Sackboy, and I wanted to make sure I wasnt treading on toes if I gave it out for free...I had no intention of making money from it. But I was told not to. MM told me they might bring out their own knitting pattern, so I simply gave them my crochet pattern, and told them they could do what they wanted with it...publish it or not..

Its a pity, since the game is all about creation, and sharing your creation, that such a dampner has been put on this. There is only a handful of people who want home-made Sackboys, so its not like they would loose that much money...

Once you give your magazine to someone, you are passing over ownership. It is then theirs, and thats ok..Otherwise how would 2nd hand shops exist!

But, I still don't believe anything wrong was done at the time. Although MM is miffed, the pattern is still available for free download, which leads me to believe that nothing illegal is going on. I'm wondering why MM hasn't approached The Sun/Simply Knitting/Alan Dart in this matter and have it removed. I know many people who knit and create patterns to which they have had copyrights to, and believe me, if someone was doing this to them, there would & has been legal action taken, and they are no where near the size of MM or does their patterns reach the popularity that Sackboy has.

I'm on your side. And I don't agree with people making money illegally, and I wouldn't support them, but I just don't think anyone had done anything wrong here. And hats off to you for having the ability & talent to create your own patterns and yes it is a shame that MM doesn't recognize this. When they told you not to give it away to people, did they say if you did it would be illegal? I've seen the new licensed Sackboys that are being sold, and in my opinion they are way overpriced and don't have near the quality of workmanship that the handcrafted ones do. That's probably why they didn't want your pattern out there, because people would be able to make their own and a fraction of the cost.

Anyway, I've knit many of the Alan Dart ones and gave them away as gifts, etc. Everyone always compliments the quality of the work and in total it costs me maybe $5.00 in materials. I say you should keep on making your crocheted ones as well. :)

Sorry, I mustn't have put it right! There was nothing illegal in what Sony did, MM were just miffed because they were going through this legal mumbojumbo to find out whether or not I could go ahead..and then a knitted pattern came out! So, then they thought they would bring out their own version..but no sign of it yet!

The only reason I was being so careful is because of an incident where the BBC threatened to sue Mazzmataz, who had free Dr. Who patterns on her blog. You can read about it on the Open Rights Group website. She had to take all the patterns down.

Because of that I'm very careful what I put up online...
