while i was living away from home for a good few months i used to drink everynight , somenights up to 10 cans, i mean everyday.. wasnt healthy

i felt terrible and used to start straight once i finished work at 5 to 12 or 1 that night..

i think it was down to boredom more than anything, but i also have serious anxiety problems, i didnt like sitting down watching tv outside my room with strangers as it made me feel extremly nervous etc

now that im home i barely ever booze, im just wondering is it wrong to have a good few cans once or twice a week? ( 8 or 9 ) Say fri and saturday, i like to chat on skype and things with some friends iv made online and play computer games, i find it just a good laugh and generally were all having a few

like i said its once or twice a week but alot of nights im thirty for a beer but i dont buy any

The recommended number of units of alcohol for an adult male per week is 21. With only two nights of drinking 8 or 9 beers you are drinking about 36 units, 15 above the recommended amount. Drinking, say, 8 cans a night every night for a week, would put you at 112 units. You can see this is not good or normal.

Alot of Irish people will disagree with me, but I think your current drinking is excessive. There is no need to drink any more than 4 or 5 drinks on any given night, and even that is pushing it imo.

Usually once we start asking questions about our drinking there is something to be concerned about.

That's the yardstick I would go by alright. Many a problem drinker has started out of boredom or "ah sure a few last thing at night to sleep".

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I'd be of the opinion that drinking twice a week is fine. Saying that 8/9 cans is a lot, but if we're talking the weekend then i guess what of it?

To me drinking 8/9 cans once/twice a week doesn't seem particularly excessive, but it depends on you OP. Some people could drink 8/9 cans and still be near-sober, if I drink 8/9 cans all bets are off and I'm lucky if I wake up in my own bed!

8/9 cans 2/3 times a week isn't that big a deal(in my opinion). But everyone is different. Let's say someone was really social and went out 4/5 times a week they would clock up a fair amount of units, but people would'nt bat an eye lid as it's done in a social eviroment.
My final thought, everyone to their own....

Drinking heavily or using alcohol as a crutch through a difficult time doesn't make you an alcoholic. Neither does fancying a few beers. You COULD be heading for problems if you're starting to worry about your drinking. If you've no control over drink and its wrecking even parts of your life then you've a serious problem.

Heya man, its good to hear you've given the drinking every night a knock on the head, fair play cause your right thats not healthy at all.

What your doing now is perfectly normal. It's the weekend and your having a few beers. Don't even think twice about it. What previous people have said about units and the recommended amount are in the clouds. It's media driven crap to scare you.

I go out usually 2 nights a week, fri/sat on the weekends and I drink a hell of alot more then you would by sitting in drinking a few cans. I'm not gonna be doing it forever im enjoying myself while I can and i'm healthy but I do work out during the week aswell.

Honestly don't worry about it but if it starts to creep into the week days or goes beyond one or two nights then you need to take a step back and cut down. Hope this helps.

Although this is a well meaning reply I would look at this matter from a different angle. I have a drink on average 4 nights a week (weekends included). And approx 4 drinks each time. So lets say 16 cans over a week period.

Compare this to your "I go out usually 2 nights a week, fri/sat on the weekends and I drink a hell of alot more then you", which the OP posted as 8 or 9 cans a night. So the drinks your throwing back over a week period exceeds my average week intake.

So your perspective of "don't worry about it but if it starts to creep into the week days or goes beyond one or two nights then you need to take a step back and cut down." is well meaning but ignorant in my opinion.

OP, I know many's the man living as you are and they are sound solid minded guys with good careers with girlfriends etc or pulling power, whichever they are in too. Put the thoughts out of your mind, your the same the most young guys out there.

Irish peoples attitudes towards alcohol amazes me sometimes. 8 or 9 beers is a HUGE ammount of alcohol to be consuming. Even if its at the weekend, you are taking ALL your units in one go. Wouldn t it be better to spread it out?

You know the attitude is very funny towards this.
I would have a small glass of red wine a day with my dinner or with some cheese or dark chocolate. (very European:D) I would have no more than 3 maximum on a Friday night if that. I never go beyond 3. Yet Irish people think its odd I drink a glass a day.
I am drinking under the recommended units and my doctor says its fine as I don t binge drink (ie. have all my units in one go) It makes sense.
Yet Irish people have gasped when I told them I have one glass a day......

    Yet I have never

    been sick because of alcohol
    got blind drunk
Don t even get hangovers:) (hahahhaha)

Everything in moderation,,,,,,,,,,,,,, The French and Europeans are on to something Im tellin you ...
