I'm travelling to the US in December.
    First time etc.

Being generally clueless about these things, I want to get good travel insurance specifically health insurance.

Any advice? I don't currently hold VHI or any personal health insurance at the moment.

Sorry Bug, can't give any advice on this but would be very interested in any replies as in similar situation to you. Going to NY for 5 days in Dec. We have health ins with Quinn (formerly BUPA) but not sure this covers us?

Sometimes when you are booking your flight (depending on airline etc.) they will throw in travel insurance for free.
If you are booking through an agency, they can recommend someone, even if you are not booking through a travel agent, you can still stop in and buy insurance.

The insurance that you take also depends alot on what you are going to be doing while there, for example, there are different policies for someone who's gonna be doing adventure sports to someone who is going to be sightseeing.

I've used www.insure.ie and they were quite reasonable, I'd recommend yearly travel insurance, it doesn't work out much dearer than single trip and it covers you for any subsequent trips/weekends away that you may go on. If you Google travel insurance, you will get a ton of options, there doesn't tend to be that much difference between the different companies.

Be careful though if you have any pre-existing illnesses, I forgot to declare my hubby's Chrohns to insure.ie and they wouldn't cover it when he ended up in hospital in America, it was my own fault for not reading small print, so do be careful.
