Is it worth going for the Pro instead?

Evening all. I'm going to be getting myself a Macbook in the not-too-distant future, but I'm kind of at a crossroads with regards to which one to go for.

The main reason I'm getting it is for college. I'm going to be working with editing software for the next 3 or so years and since all the labs in college are all Macs I'm jumping on the same boat. I haven't decided which editing software I'll be working with, but it'll be one of Pro Tools, Final Cut Express, or some sort of photoshop program (probably Adobe).

If I settle for a standard Macbook with 2.1Ghz, will that be enough to run any of those programs without too much hassle, or is it worth spending the extra few hundred to go for the more powerful 2.4 on the Pro?

Also, what memory size would any of you recommend? Am I right in thinking at least 2Mbs?

Yep, definately would have to recommend the Pro after considering your software requirements. You'll certainly need the extra ram and HD space for Final Cut Pro and Pro Tools. Plus the bigger screen will be a major advantage for sound and video editing.

    All the best. :)

Oh and yes the more RAM the Better. Those two programs particularly would be a major drain on RAM. 2 Mbs or even more if it's possible on the new MBP's should do the job but if you can go for 4 Mbs that would be a serious boost for using Final Cut Pro. Most Final Cut Pro users would be using a PowerMac, the tower, for the memory and HD expansion possibilities so a MBP would always be slightly struggling with the demands FCP would put on it.

    You mean GB right?

Go for the Pro. For serious creative apps like Photoshop and Final Cut/Logic would seriously benefit from the extra horsepower.

I see....thanks for that, it's kind of what I half expected the answer to be tbh. Sounds like a lot more saving is required :)

Deffo the pro. But I'd advise against the 17" just for the extra couple of inches - it's far less portable. I have the 15" MBP and I use it for Final Cut Studio and Logic. I have a second monitor at home for intensive work (for any editing program you're gonna really want need an extra monitor).

If you're going to use FCP then also budget for an external firewire drive for the media.

    Aren't DDR3 SO-DIMMs still riotously expensive though?
