What use is a 2 year cert these days from one of the ITs ? Is it just a complete waste of time or what's the story ?

    Thanks

Can you be a bit more specific?

thats a bit of a sweeping statement there chief... what use is any cert if you have a wealth of real life practice? none but it gets your foot in the door for an interview and gives you something to prove you have invested time in a particular subject.

Personally I'm all about the cert's after studying or implementing a piece of software, its good proof you're A: dedicated to self improving and B: able to retain enough knowledge to pass an exam :)

in reference to the IT's certs, you have to start somewhere.

Sorry, yes I can. A certificate in Computing gained after 2 years in Tallaght IT. What use is it in terms of a job? Does it just put me at the front of the queue to work in the Eircom helpdesk above people who don't have one or does it actually let me move further into IT without neccessarily having any experience?

"you have to start somewhere" - this leads me to believe you wouldn't value them very highly? It's better than nothing but it's not really much ?

My apologies, I thought you were being smart about the forum being called "IT Certification" and you having a certificate from an IT.

It probably wouldn't get you anywhere tbh. There is not much you would learn in a 2 year cert course unless it was specialised.

I wouldn't value them much. I know plenty of people who did degrees in IT and still know next to nothing about IT.

If, for instance, you achieved a certificate in computing and then gained experience or furthered your knowledge by self study/learning then you could show something but a 2 year certificate by itself is pretty useless. IMO.

Someone with a genuine interest in IT and some sort of portfolio of work (for example, a person who has written a semi-commercial application for a mobile phone) would impress me a lot more than someone with a two year certificate from Tallaght IT.

Loads of people who work in IT don't give a damn about it or are useless at their job. Give me someone with a genuine interest anyday. :)

Saying all that... I do think education is very important, and would be impressed by someone who has an positive attitude to life long learning.

Are you thinking of doing this course and want to know your options afterwards or have you already done this couyrse and are unsure what steps to take next?
