Playing the PGA @ Palmerstown House for the first time on Saturday.. I'm pretty sure I'm in for a treat, right? Any tips about the course itself; holes to watch out for, holes to avoid driver or greens to play to a certain part of etc??

I'm playing with the local golf society so we'll be getting the society rate - although as yet I have no idea what that is... Will post it up when I find out.

WHIP IT, get there early and hit a few balls on the range and practice green. Really, really good facilities - totally flat range and all grass bays. Pitching and putting green beside it is great as well.

    Par 5s are great.

Some great holes on the course but I think the 18th is a weak hole on the course compared to some of the other holes.

We played it in a fourball and 3 of us parred it where neither player is a single figure handicap all 11-14.

Helped probably we all hit the fairway and hit irons into the green.

The 9th is a tricky hole as you are not sure how fair it is to hit your 2nd shot.

The tee box makers need a touch of paint as they all look them same

Have to agree with you about the teebox markers! Somebody could easily make a costly mistake in competition there.

But what a gorgeous golf course. I loved it and will be back for that aforementioned Monday Open again soon.

The 9th is some hole alright and I was pretty devastated to make a complete mess of it! Drove into the water, and then duly pushed my third in there as well.

There are two very interesting par fives on the course, they're unlike any others I've played.

Would actually disagree with you on the closing hole. It's not one of the hardest holes on the course, granted, but I wouldn't call it easy either. There's water the full length of the hole and even though we played from the Society tees today (ie, the furthest ones forward) I still needed a six iron hit absolutely out of the screws to get home - and I had hit my longest drive of the day here.

Today, the pin was back left (on 35yds according to the Pin Sheet) so maybe that made it tougher as it's a small target back there and you have to deal with a larger ridge in the centre of the green.

Like your group, three of us parred it but two needed 15ft putts to do so while the only single-figure handicapper in our group (off 3) actually bogeyed it on his way to 37pts.

Conclusion - great course, will be back soon! :)

I think the Society I played with had 50 golfers out? I was out in one of the early groups so can't be sure and obviously have no idea who or how many went out other than the Society I was with.

Lots of damp areas and I felt some bunkers should have been ruled out of play, but in general the course was well roped off and well protected. It is mid-November after all! The greens were dry and in decent nick.

Club house is a bit tacky, fantastic course though, great staff, service and food.
