My iBook G4 is on its last legs....

    Hi all,

I have a 3 year old iBook G4. I'm pretty sure its on its way out. It just had a kernel panic and I've remember it's been a while since I've done a full back up of my drive. I have a 120GB Maxtor external hard drive which I'm terrified to plug in in case it provokes another kernel panic (I've read somewhere that USB devices can do that) so I'm backing up important folders (iTunes,iPhoto and all my college work) onto disc.

My question is is it ok to copy these onto DVD/CD discs? If the unthinkable does happen and I need to get a new laptop, will I be able to retrieve my data from these discs? Also I'm not really sure as to the integrity of my external hard drive, I copied stuff into it using both click and drag and SuperDuper and havent been able to restore some files, I wouldn't be able to boot the iBook from it would I? Any answers would be really appreciated, I'm in a bit of a tizzy cos I've essays due on Friday and don't want to have to do them on my Eee pc! Thanks!

Well, I can't really give you a good advice without knowing exactly what's going on.

A three-year old iBook is definitely not the problem. If maintained with care, these little fellas can live a lot more.
It's technology's advance (?) that makes them obsolete but if you're not willing to run the latest software you should be OK without buying a new one.
After all these guys are dead silent and ice cold in comparison to the newest Apple portable product line.

Kernel panic's can be caused by a number of root causes.
Look into the logfiles of through console.app, they might reveal something.

It may not be more than a loose memory module or as you say some problem around your external (or internal for that matter) HDD.

You can of course burn your data to optical media if you like. Be sure to have the OS X installler DVD in case one of your drives die and you'll need to reinstall.

iBooks boot from firewire only as external device so if your drive is USB only you can't use it as a boot device (officially).
