ok i know there are other threads like this but still! most likely starting in Nuig next year and just want to know what Galway is like, whats the life like there, nightlife etc etc and is it too small that you'd get sick of, or is it a nice size thats just perfect. i've been in galway and went out there and i have a fair idea its a lot nicer than home!! thanks!!!!

Galway is a fantastic spot really. Its just a really chilled out city, there seems to be a completely chilled out attitude up there compared to the rest of the country. I have never lived there but I have spent a lot of time there. I wouldn't think that you'll get sick of it in a hurry!:D

Chilled indeed! All I can think of is a sunny day down spanish arch with a few cans chillin out. Damn you Rain <shakes fist>.

Its a great auld spot, been here 4 years now and ive not got bord of it anyways. Good night life, good atmosphere about the town.... and then it rains alot.
Better then my home town of Athlone anyways.

You make a good point, its exactly the right size, so theres enough people to make it fun, and enough clubs and events, but yet you know where everyone lives and you can usually walk to their houses!

The attitude is great, Dublin and Limerick are all go go, but not in a nice way, Galway is relaxed. Favorite place in Ireland. By a mile

Galway was relaxed into the late 90s, but its gettin like any other city now, in my opinion!

I always say that Galway is big enough that if you wanted to bump into someone you surely never would, but it's small enough that if you wanted to avoid someone you'd surely bump into them! :D

Galway is a nice city though, could easily do a lot worse! Pity about the rain but you get used to it. I've lived here all my life so the rain doesn't really bother me.

Ah, for some reason I though you were talking about me (me currently living in Athlone and planing to go to NUIG next year). Immediatly jumped to the conclusion it was an old status of mine on facebook or something stupid like that.
Apologies, ive been studying since 11 and the brains a bit fried.

Yes, Galway will be much SAVAGENESS!
    What course you gonna do?

haha no bother! thought you seemed oddly rude! :P
emm planning on doing a Bsc in information technology, but that all balanced on the maths requirement dropping this year! the points are fairly easy, but pulling off an A in a maths paper isnt sumthing im willing to count on like!
have friends up in galway already this year, and the plan is to head up on friday night for a birthday! :D

  • Moderators Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

Yeah, sorry about the odd rudeness. Id not a clue what was going on.
An A in maths, I guess thats Pass Maths?

Cant say friday will be much craic in Galway. Exams start on Monday so id say alot of students will be nose's in books that night.

    Edit: I PM'd you there

hmm. seems like a slight flaw.. i'll see how this evolves!
kinda bringing the post off topic, probably against the rules somehow, so ill leave ya to it! cya next year! :P

Great city, about perfect size in fairness. Have a few mates over in the IT and it's only a euro or so and the right bus and I'm basically at their doorstep.

Nightlife is good, too good hence why I'm about to fail exams.

Galway around March or April when there is even the sign of good weather is a savage place to be, just chill out with a few cans and do nothing.

Im living here six years and still loving it. studied in NUIG for 5 years and now work there. the traffic and what not is a nightmare, you will find some very ignorant people and it rains and rains and rains! however you will forget all of the above when your with friends, meet some lovely new ones and get the odd sunny day. (Spanish arch also springs to mind!) If u dont like it here i demand to know why!

PS any spelling mistakes are no reflection on the education i received ;)

its great, the best few weeks of my life were the first few in first year in corrib village.just non stop drinking really.try and do a bit of study though.you can have the craic but ya want to have a free summer aswell.galways great, you can walk everywhere, the knacks dont really go out durin the week so your set on that regard.there really isnt anything better than pannin out at the spanish arch with a few cans and a bottle a bucky.the rain is a bit of a drawback and probably the most used excuse for missing lectures, but sure get yourself a jacket and an umbrella an ull be laughin.the college bar in nuig is also pretty special, were all pretty proud of having the best college bar in the country.its cheaper than dublin, and in galway we look down on dublin people (all in good fun) rather than the other way round in the capital.all in all if you like the craic and dont mind the rain your set

Galway is brilliant. Just absolutely excellent in every regard.

The atmosphere around the city is great and the people are as close to flawless as you will find anywhere.

Also, NUIG and GMIT are great places to study (although I will admit that I'm slightly more in favour of NUIG but I suspect that that has a lot to do with the fact that I study there and don't know that much at all about GMIT ).

If you move to somewhere like Corrib Village for your first year you would find it hard not to make friends.

I'll be on my own as well, hopefully the societies will be good for meeting people with similar tastes. Haven't even looked at accomodation yet, gonna delay that til after the open day next month.

Corrib Village is THE place to be for first years. Sure, the apartments aren't the greatest quality but you'll be having such a good time you won't even care. As one of the previous posters said, you'll find it hard not to make friends!

Nah, I'm not bothered about the state of the accommodation... I don't care about the furniture/rooms/etc... It's all the rules regarding visitors from outside. It sounds stricter than my house. And the whole idea of moving away was to get more freedom... Doesn't sound possible in Corrib Village. And I know I could sneak people in in taxis or what-have-you, but too much hassle for my liking. Don't want to be treated as a prisoner...

    Is it really that strict?!

You said you're moving here by yourself. Chances are, most of your friends will live in Corrib too...

Someone from Northern England would definitely know ****holes as they are dotted all around him. Newcastle, Sunderland, even the scenic Gateshead (which surely deserves its own 'lonely planet' guidebook at this stage)...and then Stoke on Trent the home of pottery and the BNP. Must be some correlation there. Add a ****ty Polytechnic College masquerading up as a university to give some self-esteem back the poor oppressed victims of the industrial revolution and you have reasons for the high crime rates and low unemployment. Dole merchants who time forgot who only wish they had a worldwide financial crisis to blame for their woes rather than the odds on favourite falling in the 2.30 at Haydock. Is it any wonder the Romans referred to the place as Inferior Britain.
