    Hi

My bf asked me to go to a charity ball in a few weeks, im not sure what to wear he thinks its black tie.

Does that mean a full length ball gown? I really would hate to spend money on one ill never ever again wear it.

I have a beautiful silk dress from coast i bough last december that goes down just past my knees would this be ok?

Im a size 14 with very big boobs so id like something that covers them up!!

Black tie is formal evening wear but not a ball gown (technically, that would be white tie which isn't used that much anymore).

But to answer your question, a formal evening dress from Coast would be perfect. Just add perfect accessories and you're good to go. It's important that you're wearing something you're comfortable in too so it sounds like you have the dress part sorted.

    Have a great time!

Thanks Sugark! I think my biggest fear is that I'll end up looking fat on the night!! At the moment im feeling like a size 14 is really overweight the joys of pmt

Black-tie events are always a bit nerve-wracking but you'll be fine, and I'm sure you look fine. As you don't have to buy a new dress, maybe you could get your hair done for the night? (Book well in advance though if it's near Xmas to make sure you get a booking). Nothing like new hair to make you feel fabulous!

I would always recommend a pair of magic knickers for special occasions though, and you don't have to spend a fortune on them. I got a pair in Penney's that come all the way up to just under your boobs, and they were only about €12. They really worked wonders. I was pretty surprised as my last attempt to wear magic knickers ended up with a horrible roll around my waist band. These ones in penney's which come all the way up were fantastic.

Let us know how you get on, Cinders!

I had my graduation ball two weeks ago and it was 'black tie'...most girls (including myself) were wearing dresses to the knee/just below. As you said yourself I didn't want to spend money on a long dress that I'd never wear again. TBH I found that of the girls that were wearing long dresses, they looked a bit silly (Perhaps that's as majority were wearing shorter dresses?!)
Get your hair done! I love having my hair up for occasions so went and got a lovely upstyle.
Make sure your shoes are comfortable..that way you wont be sitting down or complaining for the night, but allowing you to mingle around the place, meet new people, dance, have bita craic.
    Enjoy!:)

I am in the exact same boat as you, have a black tie event next week and am just wearing a prom dress that goes to my knee. I too couldn't justify the cost of getting a dress that I'd never wear again and I've only worn this prom dress once so I'm glad to be getting another turn out of it. I don't think i'll be the only one wearing a short dress, but I will report back and let you know!

Knee length is perfect - anything goes these days at formal events whether they are debs, balls, weddings or formal parties - you'll see every length, colour & style on the night. Enjoy!

You'll be fine, like the previous poster says, anything goes at weddings and formal occassions nowadays. I would think there'll be a lot of long dresses at a Winter wedding, I'm sure you'll fit right in, enjoy!

Just wanted to add an 'update' to this, I was at my black tie event last week and EVERYONE was wearing short dresses, I didn't see a single full length dress. There was prom dresses, corsets and skirts and also some fairly casual dresses, so please don't waste your money on a long dress!

i went to one last year and wore a long straight dress. lots of people were. guys were in tux's. its down to personal choice but you in no way will look odd or out of place as lots of others will wear shorter dresses also. you only have to wear long formal if it states formal black tie.

    enjoy x
