Hard drive upgrade questions.

I have a shiny new 320gb hard drive sitting at home waiting to go into my PS3 in place of the original 40gb. Before I take the plunge, I was wondering a few things:

    1. Do I lose all my data from my 40gb drive? I have a good few hours worth of game saves/data, movies for the kids, game demos, TV series on it at his stage.

    2. What use is the backup facility? I have an 80gb USB drive, would this work to save everything (as above) or just game data and system settings?

    3. If I was to put the old 40gb drive in a USB caddy, would I be able to rescue more/all of my stuff?

    Lastly,

    4. If it's bad news for 1,2 and 3, will I be able to read the 40gb drive with my PC via USB caddy.

Thanks in advance, and I know about the screwdriver ;)

The backup copies everything. Videos, save games the lot. Back it up to the 80GB, install the 320GB, install the latest firmware and then use the restore function to get all the data off the 80GB on to the 320GB.

BTW when I upgraded mine, my trophies didn't come across. They were still on my online profile, but they weren't listed in the GAME section.

No biggie really but just something to know.

For the PS3 to recognize the external hard drive the hard drive has to be using a FAT file system right? Even with a 80GB hard drive the largest FAT partition I've been able to create is 32GB approx and even if I create multiple ones of these it still only recognizes one of them.

So if i need to back up more that 32GB of data how do i do this? Is there a way to convert the whole 80GB to FAT?

    Thanks

Happened to me. Not saying it'll happen to everyone but anyway, I took a back-up, installed the new HDD and restored. My trophies were gone but you can still see them on my online profile.

I have a 1TB external formatted using fat32, only 1 partition. There is software you can get (can't remember the software I used) that will create a fat32 partition bigger than 32GB.

    Ditto.

    Here you go:

The large drive can be formatted to FAT32 but the single file size is still limited to 4GB. It's grand for your system backup though.

Happened to me as well, they reappeared in my trophy list when I fired up the relevant games though.
Love not having to worry about deleting stuff any more:)

I used fat32format to format the drive. It worked on my 160gb external.Free program aswell. Also if you do decide to put the old drive in a caddy this program will format the whole drive as fat 32 even though 32gb is the supposed limit of fat32.
