The Smurl family in back of home. Front row are twins Shannon and Carin. Back row from left to right are Dawn, Jack, Janet and Heather
The Smurl house was split. Jack and Janet lived in one half of the abode while Jack’s parents, John and Mary, lived in the other half of the semi-detached house.

According to the Smurls, the first signs of paranormal activity began in 1974. They reported that a television set burst into flames, and a stain appeared on a carpet overnight. Water pipes began to leak even though they were repeatedly resoldered by a plumber, and scratches resembling those from a large cat appeared on paintwork and bathroom fittings.

By 1977, the reported events were escalating. Toilets flushed without human intervention, footsteps were heard on the stairs, chest drawers opened and closed unaided, radios worked when they were not plugged in, rocking chairs rocked while empty, and a sour smell filled the house.

In 1985, John and Mary claimed to hear loud, obscene language, and Jack and Janet’s house became often extremely cold.

Two days after this, an icy cold swept the house and a strange black human shape allegedly materialised in the kitchen in front of Janet. It was about five feet nine inches tall, and with no facial features. It later appeared to Mary Smurl in her kitchen.

The violence and frequency of the events continued to escalate.

In 1986, the family brought in a controversial pair of demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren, who announced the house was haunted by three minor spirits and a powerful, evil demon. They tried to persuade the demon to leave by playing holy music and praying. The alleged demon reacted by shaking mirrors, dressers and drawers.

Jack alleges he was raped one night by a scale-covered succubus with a young girl’s body and an old woman’s head. Janet also claimed she was sexually assaulted by a shadowy humanoid figure (described as an incubus), and that pig noises were heard from the wall cavities. The attack on Janet and the shadowy apparition are similar to the description of the attacks on Carla Moran that were portrayed in the movie, “The Entity”.

The Smurls brought in Father Robert McKenna. He conducted two exorcisms in Latin and more than fifty Catholic Masses, which allegedly infuriated the demon further. The demon was said to follow them on a vacation to the Poconos and harass Jack at work.

It was at this point the Smurls appeared on television on a Philadelphia talk show called The People are Talking hosted by Richard Bey. The demon allegedly reacted by raping Jack again, and appearing to him as a half-man, half-pig. Janet was throttled and thrown about by invisible forces.

One obvious question that skeptics always ask is why the couple did not move out of their house if the attacks were so violent and distressing. The Smurl’s response being that the demon could apparently follow them anywhere; having shown this to them when they abandoned the house for a week only to be intensly harassed at the campground where they were staying.
so heres the movie,,,mods if you want to change it no probs.

have had an interest in demonology for years now and have came across the warrens a few times(not in person, just case reports and books). In my opinion they are dangerous hacks.I read a while back about 3 cases the were involved with that seemed to get far worse after their involvement, 1 in particulaar actually ended up destroying a whoe family,(no deaths just tore the family apart).Their knowledge of the subject is amaturish at best and they are basically publicity seeking whores that will do anything to appear on tv.The wife hag warren has popped up in Paranormal State a few times, where here expertise seems to go as far as just warning the crew to be careful.
Saw the episode above before, don't really know what to make of it, I think the show itself is god awful, only look at it to get a laugh at the effects and the "amazing similarities" between the actors and the people they are representing. To be honest I'd always question the reliability of anyone that would appear on a tv show to recount their experience.Any one that I have ever met that had bad experiences, barely like to talk about it let alone appear on a tv show.

Ok i just got this email from my friend who lived beside them

    Hi danny
if ya'll wanna know about the smurls i live in the same town as they did there house is right up the street and they went to my school and the truth is they made it up one of there children said it when they got teased for it and said so who cares if we made it up we are gonna be rich when the movie comes out and if u'd like i can take pictures of the house for u its not like its far lol
well i dont mean to offend any one but the family admitted they made it up and the father of the family was related to the producer of the movie and thats how they got the movie deal again i dont mean to offend any one but i have lived in this town my entire life it the story is made up and i have been to the house and knew people who also lived in the house i knew the family and there cousins and it all came out it was made up now i am fine with the idea there might have been something small there but as for the huge stories they told they admitted it was false and current residences say its not haunted so of course the smurls say oh well thats because they followed us. The Warrens came on board when they heard a tv was intrested but what ever you choose to believe i dont care just that i know what the family said and what really happened here in my town

danny has for the family we last heard they moved to wilkes-barre "a few mins away from here" but some people said they moved away after that but no one really knows no one really cared, people didnt like them very much they had a bad reputation in town, as for the new tennents they have had no problems actually there have been a few others since then and none of them have had a single problem as for any parts of the family still being here they may still have relatives in the area but id have to check because i was friends with there cousins but i dont know where they r now so i'll get back to you on it - Quintin

hummmm intresting,,,i still have doubts about the Warrens was it there comments that blew it out of the water ? I THINK SO
ill keep you posted on what info returns

cool, to have any doubts clarified and can't say I'm surprised at all.As I said I'm always sceptical of anyone that chooses to appear on tv and tell a paranormal story, especially one so far out.Any one I have come into contact with that has suffered any paranormal don't even feel comfortable talking amongst friends about it, for fear of being classified as insane, let alone appear on a tv show.

I didn't watch the entire thing Danny sorry, too long and not enough time. I watched up to the last three and every thing seem like little things happening at that time, stress etc etc.

With the e-mail from the area, it was good of him to send it and state what he did but really imo I wouldn't take his word for it any more than you can take the family view unless you did it for your self. Yes its doggy when people get the media involved as it leaves it wide open to judgements of every nature and so is how it is. As for a child saying "We made it up" well it would make sense for a child to say that and be defensive, so leave the child out of it. The parents saying it well, you would have to take there word for it, but why go through all of that story to get the media in and then blow the whole thing out of the water by saying they made it up, it would get more attraction if they kept the lie up and more money would be made. Again I would go back to my origional statement, you would have to look at this from a completlely outside, open view and its nearly impossible to do this after such interference by the media etc. Interesting story all the same Danny.

Well here is the thing , in the movie they say that the entity followed them. But in the history of pg activity, it only last some months then completly stops. It is also centres around a certain person.
It doesnt follow the person either. Normaly when somebody says ghosts follow them (in general) its a flashing red light .

But what about Derek Acorah?? :D

Ive always been a bit weary of demonology. I can understand mean and nasty spirits but when people make claim to have demons knocking about it raises an eyebrow. Often it takes creative license from movies and books that that involve demonic possession. I find it hard to accept that demons would be so logical and predictable. While spirits being the souls/echos of what was once a human, a demon is cut from a different cloth and therefore it wouldnt make sense for a demon to "haunt" humans in the same way spirits do.

If i go on any further I'll probably come across as being a weirdo so I'll stop here to avoid embarrassment! :o

Think the best way to look at it if you believe in demons is, why would they even bother, we as humans don't go around trying to possess wood lice or flies, or deliberately trying to make their life a misery(well I don't any way...unless its a spider,)

yes but us humans do manipluate other humans to either do their bidding or to make their life misery or to get what they want .

Also the word "Demon" is thrown around way too much .

I agree with you Dre as in Dray, I have always had a little problem with something making you do what they want you to, be it a good or negitive influence but manipulation or sugguestion is far more likely imo, I often think that this word prosession or a Demon or my guide told me to do it is just a way to get out of personal responiablity.
