    Hi

Im planning on replacing my aging XP desktop at home with an iMAC.

I understand recently that the apple laptop range have just been updated.

I heard rumours that the iMAC range is due an update.

Obviosuly dont want to buy an iMAC and then have a new model come out shortly after.

Does anyone here know if a new model is coming out?

    Cheers!

Definitely not before Christmas. But probably in or around Macworld SF in January. Unless you need it now I'd wait.

On average it's updated every 211 days.

It's been 197 days since the last update... so chances are it does have an update on the way.

If there are any changes they may just be speed bumps.

Americans sometimes refer to Thanksgiving as the Holidays and the sums Monkey gives up seem to add up to a refit in and around then. iMac revamps tend to be a bit more drastic than the other Apple lines seem to experience so I'd suggest that you try hang on till then and then make a go for it, OP.

In my experience stock shortages determine a change or upgrade. None on the imac, 3 week wait on a low end mac mini, make your own mind up. I only purchased and iMac 3 weeks ago, been looking after macs for the past 17-18 years, just replaced a dual G5 top spec, the iMac absolutely hammers it into the ground, I wouldn't worry about buying now to be honest, it's like a PC, you upgrade, you regret it for not holding on for 3 months, regardless of what you do it's going to be upgraded anyway. If you don't need it now don't get it, if you do need it now, get it and love it and don't think about what's around the corner if you get into that cycle you'll never enjoy what you have looking on in envy of the guy who bought 212 days after you or whatever stats were out above.

Very true. If you buy now, regardless of any future updates, your still getting a top-class computer. Also, it is important to note that it will prob only be some speed bumps if anything at all in the next upgrade.

    Which model?

    Looking at 24" iMAC

Does the graphics upgrade make much of a difference?

Bear in mind I will only be doing photo and video editing and maybe watching DVDs, no hard core gaming.

Anyone out there with any experience?

All I'll say to you is if you have the money to update the graphics card go for it.
But you won't miss much if you're not a gamer.
To be honest invest in Hard Drives and ram first and then if you still have money in your budget update the graphics card.

You can't really upgrade the graphics in a mac. I'm sure it's possible... but good luck to you...

As far as watching dvd's and a bit of editing, the 20" will be fine, but there's a lot to be said for the 24" screen :D

I was talking about when ordering... :)
I know you can't upgrade mac graphics cards. Being a Mac owner I know what Apple are like hehe

Yeah, I would always spend my money on the non-upgradeable componants first. Mainly the processor as your likely to be holding on too this machine for a number of year and you want it to stand you well speed wisein a couple of years.

Also, I would definitly sqeeze your budget just for that 24" screen. It is just fantastic! Although, if you sit close to your computer and have a tight workspace it might be overkill

If someone randomly walked up to me in the street, handed me a bag and said: "Dave, here's two grand. Do what you want with it." I'd say "How did you know my name? And where is the nearest authorised apple reseller so I can purchase a 24-inch iMac with 4 gigs or RAM?"

Someone in college got one installed in their studio space last week, and I am a little bit jealous. If there's not an upgrade due for another few months, go ahead and get it now anyway. It's a fantastic machine, I highly doubt you'll be disappointed.

Okies I guess the 24 inch it is then!

Will the base model do ok for editing AVCHD does anyone know? Or have any experience with this?

I googled a bit and read that you can at a later stage reasonably easily upgrade the current iMACs graphics cards. Is this true?
