    Hi,

System Restore is something that has never been of any worth to me. So, I've disabled it (it takes up a lot of space). I have also been running my PC without any anti-virus software for many months now, and it (my PC) has never run better. Such software is unneeded if you are a handyman with the PC. Anyway, have you tried going into Safe Mode from boot-up?

    Kevin

yes system restore takes up a lot of space
and no it won't solve every problem

but it works in a lot of cases and takes far less time and brain power than a reinstall so best to leave on unless hard drive space is far more valuable than your time

can you get into safe mode , is it stabel there ?

have you rolled all the way back with system restore or just to the most recent one, sometimes it's worth stepping back further

    Tks for all the input

went back to earliest restore: no joy.

'made' him re do the pc from scratch xp/sp2/sp3/network card drivers etc etc

it failed to restart after SP2 the first time so he had to do it all again:D

    lesson learned I hope.

I did download one of the malware products before we re-cut the pc and it recorded 1675 'malwares'

    thanks again
