    Hi Guys,

Can I ask would the following receiver work for DTT in Ireland ?
I am sorry the text is in German.
The receiver appears to be a combo dvb-s2 and dvb-t receiver.
The product sells for €249 on the Siemens Austria web site and various sellers from Austria sell it for €129 approx.
I have already given away my mpeg 2 dvb-t receivers to friends in the UK.
I am just cautious to buy any new equiment if RTE change to DVB-T2 or is dvb-t using mpeg in stone at the moment ?
Would I be right in thinking that this product would allow me to receive RTE mpeg4 broadcasts and ITV HD, BBCHD & Channel 4 HD on Sky satellite ?

Any infos would be appreciated ?

    Many thanks,

    GB

There's a good chance that it'll work with Irish DVB-T as the sat tuner and the terrestrial tuner probably share the same mpeg2/mpeg4 chips. However, there is no guarantee it will work and you can't be certain from reading the specs either - it depends on how the firmware is written.

BBCHD should be ok. ITV depends on whether you can enter the PIDs manually. Channel 4 HD is encrypted in Videoguard for now, so would require a dragon cam and a ftv card.

    DVB-T2 is years off.

It's a surprisingly low price at €129 - are you sure this isn't linked to an ORF subscription or limited to Austrian customers?

One of my German friends (living in Kerry) was just telling me that they sell this Siemens HD1 Combo receiver in a German bricks & mortar store called Medi Max normal price €149 (walk away price) but that they were offering a special limited time price of €99. The company do not have a web shop i'm afraid.

He wasn't too sure if it would work in Ireland. Would be a very nice price if it works with Irish DTT & BBC HD etc.

    Good find!

That is a rebadged Handan HCX 6000 STHD, made in Korea.

    http://www.handan.co.kr/pdf_spec/Spec%20Sheet%20_%20HCX%206000%20STHD%20_%20070418.pdf

They also make DTT boxes for Finland and Sweden which are rebadged under the Dilog Brand.

    Yes cheap at the price.

nothing to say the dvb-t is mpeg4 so prob not. The mpeg4 referred to there is that it plays divx/mpeg4 files.

    DVB-T2 is years off.

DVB-T2 equipment is expected to be 9-12 months off - not yearS. A lot can happen in a year.

"The first" does not mean "commercially" available. Regardless we are using DVB-T here Lars :)

The quote says ""The first commercial DVB-T2 receivers ..."

I guess, that the EBU thinks "commercially" when they write like this. Will they be available in volume by July 2009? - likely not, but sometime a little later they most surely will.
However, a tested chip can very fast be produced in millions and DVB-T2 is just a chip.

Remember the number of households in RoI is fewer than post-DSO households in the UK by the end of 2009. Post-DSO all will be able to receive DVB-T2 signals and Ofcom plan for a DVB-T2 transmitter in London from early 2010.
There will soon be a market for DVB-T2 far larger than Ireland.

Regardless we are using DVB-T here Lars :)

    I know!

And I did not write that new wisedom had invaded your country - I just hope it will !

As if there isnt enough confusion out there already people HAVE to start talking about dvb-t2 in the context of a combo box for Ireland.

Lars the simple reality of it is that Dvb-t2 IS NOT the technology being deployed here in Ireland it is DVB-T and come DTT launch day next year, IT STILL will be DVB-T.

And when I was talking about commercially available I was also talking about the comparitive commercial cost of them versus extablished dvb-t boxes on the market.

Either way the only people that should be concerned are Freeview viewers who would like HD Channels, but they are in the UK and NOT Ireland.

Beside that it makes not much sense to discuss the missing dvb-t2 capabilities for freeview HD for a combo box which is able to receive HD via satellite.
