Strange problem browsing the net

    Hi,

I am looking at a friends PC at the moment and it has a strange problem. It can only browse to www.google.ie and some pages off it, none other. So, in otherwords, if I launch ie with google.ie as the homepage, it works, then if I do a search, any search, it will display all the results, but when I click on any of the results I get page not displayed, likewise if I try any other url.

Now, bear with me. It is connected to the internet, but it just cannot browse, i can ping websites, i can log onto messenger, it downloads and all the latest updates from the web, just a problem with browsing and it's not ie dependent, i've tried Google chrome and firefox also with the exact same result.

The PC is an iQon, pentiun II, which had Windows XP SP1 on it, there were no updates or anti-virus and messages about viruses on it, I installed XP SP 2 and all the updates and anti virus Pro 2009 (it wouldn't let me complete installs of any other anti-virus for some reason. It seems clean now in terms of viruses, but the same thing is happening. I tried everything on this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326155 except for the system restore, won't let me do this either for some reason.

I'm just hoping someone had a similar problem to this and knows what is causing. BTW, it's not the router either, i tried my laptop at his house and it worked fine and brought his PC here and it has the same problem with my broadband.

You mean Panda Antivirus Pro 2009?

Nope, I mean AntiVirusPro 2009, which i've just googled and found it's actually malware, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/remove-antivirus-pro-2009
very good one i might add. Can't believe I haven't googled it up to now, i just assumed it was a real anti-virus that I hadn't heard of, this explains why I couldn't install Norton.

So, your farily basic question to my long winded query seems to have solved my problem, could have saved me a lot of time (assuming I can gte rid of it), if I had just googled it initially.....:mad:

    Thks

Moved the thread to a better place for help with this.

Read and try the steps in the sticky at the top of the forum, and post any relevant logs.

Bloody AntiVirusPro 2009 (and earlier variations) - why isn't someone suing their ass (I know it would be hard but...) surely a government consumer department somewhere should, for all the hassle this one company/business does to computers the world over!

The company behind it is in areas of Eastern Europe like Lithuania/Russia where its very tough to bring legal action against them

MBAM should remove it, if not post a HJT log

Almost got Antivirus 2009 installed yesterday. i was googling a search for "how to disable norton firewall" and the second site on the results page fired up the notorius "antivirus 2009 download now" rubbish. shut down browser fairly quickly but it had still loaded cookies and ie. shortcut on my computer. I ran Xoftspy , also ad aware and malware bytes and my computer seems clean at the minute, but I still am a bit wary of it ,to be honest.
