All settings and files disappear - after update?

This has happened to me three times now over 12 months.

I have a Mac mini running Power PC and OSX 10.4.11. On 3 occasions at intervals, I have booted up only to find that all my user files: docs, music (iTunes, Garageband), email settings, bookmarks - the lot have vanished. Completely! Thank goodness I back all my files onto an external hard drive at least once a week, so I never lost too much data after restoring them.

Previously, after restoring the files, everything worked normally after a reboot, but this last time I ended up having to set up my email accounts on Mail all over again.

I think this may be related to downloading an update. Trouble is, I'm not entirely sure which Mac prog was updated. Could have been the OS or Office for Mac.

I've googled this but found nothing quite the same. Has anyone here heard of or experienced this happening? Thanks.
