Watched about half of it last night, Did they get the extras from the leftover cast of Glenroe?? Miley was there and since when did the Greeks have Irish accents!

    A thoroughly shocking film!

I never made it to the end of the movie (and i have watched a lot of bad bad movies !), but there was a scene where "miley was selling cattle or horses in a mart. Just for the sunshine in Alexandra it could have been lifted from glenroe alright.

Great idea for a movie, but terribly done, in fairness, the line up for it was quite impressive, and that was the main reason i watched it after hearing so many bad reviews.

Maybe it got a lot better towards the end, but im not curious enough to watch it again to find out.

since when did the Greeks have Irish accents!

Some clever nut figured that the closest modern accent to the ancient Greeks is a "celtic" one, so that's probably why.

I'll always remember seeing this in the cinema because the fattie sitting next to our group starting breathing REALLY loud during the sex scene then got up and left and never returned.

And who told Colin Farrell, instead of saying his lines, TO. SHOUT. EACH. WORD, then pause, FOR. DRAMATIC. Effect. Before, Saying, nay Orating, nay, DECLAIMING them, as if they were the greatest utterance in the history of mankind. Bizarre.

I liked the soundtrack though, and the sweeping vistas of the first battle scene were quite a sight on the cinema screen.

    !

Since when did German soldiers and officers during WW2 have English of American accents? Since when did Roman generals have Aussie accents?

    Pointless arguement tbh.

When it's distracting you from the actual film then it's a fairly relevant argument.

I found the accents a bit jarring at first but got used to them as they go on. The only problem was Angelina Jolie putting on an accent, so I kept thinking "if she could, why couldn't everyone else?"

How are the Irish accents in Alexander any more distracting than American Germans or Aussie Romans? The only reason it seems that way is because as Irish people we notice the Irish accent more.

Exactly. And it takes away from the film for people. That's my point.

Anthony Hopkins Ptolemy Ancient History 101 at the start of the movie hinted at the mess to follow. It could have, nay should have, been great - I mean how can you make a confused, boring mess out the life of Alexander? Stone also ignored too many interesting events like the Gordian Knot and the Oracle in the desert. Robert Rossens version form 1956 with Richard Burton is waaaay better

I didn't think that it was that bad. But I do think that it could have been alot better. It was a bit of a shock to hear Irish accents in it but everyone else in the world wouldn't have noticed. Anyway it was good to see irish actors being given the chance.

I'm going to have to see the Richard Burton one at some stage. I think that they made better epics back in the day. But it does depend on the film, Braveheart and Gladiator are great.

When you consider that america and the UK are the biggest english speaking film industries were used to having these accents in films. At least they have a connection to WW2

However having Miley from Glenroe pretend to be some type of Greek merchant and have him still talk as if he's selling Glenroe pigs its just hilarious.

I actually didnt think it was that bad, the Irish accent did bother me but i guess Stone wanted to be clever and actually, for once, include a fact in the film. To be honest i got over the accent.

    I actually think the scene
where Alexander battles the guy on the elephant near the end in slow motion is fantastic

Macedonians were not ancient Greeks, according to Classical scholars the Ancient Greeks were well spoken, whereas the uncouth Macedonians spoke Greek in a harsher accent comparable with how the Scots speak modern English. I am not sure of the exact scholar who said it but maybe that is why the cast had Irish accents.

It is a horrible film though.

Jolie's accent was the funniest thing about the film, it was veering towards the 'I vant to suck your blood' variety.
