I have a 2005 Ford Focus and over the past few weeks I've found lots of water in the boot under the carpet on the off side of the boot floor and also under the Spare wheel. None if the carpets are wet it’s just the body of the car. I can’t see where it coming from. Any ideas would be great.

Have you a sunroof? It could be that the drains are blocked.

Does that back washer work or if it does, does it come out slowly?

Usually water will not travel upwards by the power of gravity.

I've I heard of water ingress around the door hinges on some Foci, came across this..

The second is a Ford known problem to do with water ingress around the hatch hinge weld joints. This only affects a few percent of cars but unfortunately mine was one of them. If I had covered less than 1000 miles when I noticed the problem then the car would have been returned under the Ford Direct returns policy. The car is booked in at my local dealer to have the welds ‘sealed’ under warranty. I just hope it solves the problem; little annoying things like this can turn a great car into an ok one and put people off buying Ford again.

Indeed. The boot hatch lock on my 05 Focus has just developed a mind of it's own. Boot will not open since yesterday, there is no key hole, I can hear the clicking when I go over a speed ramp but it doesn't effect the central locking. The trunk open beeping sound is also driving me mad! My local autospark says it is a common problem with the Focus and is replacing the motor in the trunk tomorrow. It's the first issue I've had with the car though.

Water gets thrown up from the road on wet days. Why give a smart arse type reply when really you were making a fool of yourself.

Could it be to do with replacing the pollen filter.

I had an '02 focus that had that water problem under the carpet insde the cabin whether it can develop in the boot as well.

The pollen filter is way up the front. It wouldn't cause this.

It's not the motor (well solenoid really) that controls the boot latch, it's the switch that lurks behind that rubber cover you press to open the boot. Water gets into the little microswitch that's in there and it keeps making intermittent contact. It's a well known problem and there's an improved replacement part for it available from Ford. You may be able to get Ford to replace it for free,if you're lucky.

I did mine myself, by removing the switch, digging out the sealant that encases it, giving it a thorough clean out and replacing it with something better. Has worked perfectly since. Alternatively you just get the replacement from Ford and fit it yourself, it's a piece if piss for anyone who's in any way mechanically minded.

    1. Take everything out of the boot (spare wheel, loose carpets, etc.)
    2. Dry the boot thoroughly
    3. Take a hose and poor water everywhere on the outside of the car around the boot area until you find where the water is coming in

    This worked for me :)

The spare wheel well in my 728i is also covered in condensation/water. Everything else is dry, no holes that I can see. Even the boot floor above the well is bone dry, just the well itself. Any ideas?

Apologies for digging up an old thread. I have a deposit down on a 05 focus which is damp in the boot with water around the spare and a bit on the right. Carpet covering around is bone dry. Got it checked at a garage and they said it's most likely due to sitting up for 1.5 year. How can I be sure of this? Dry out the boot then wait to see? From googling water could be getting in via the rear light?
