Bloody RTE. Gallipoli was on this afternoon and RTE cut the last 5 minutes from the film - the climax! They cut it at the stage when Mel Gibsons character was racing back through the trenches to halt the "going over the top". I've seen the film before and know what happens but why did they cut it?

It has happened loads of times. They don't allow enough time for the film. They cut over 30 mins off a film a few months ago. They suddenly cut the film off at the climax.

That 70's show started and after about 2 mins they stopped it, apologised and decided to show the end of the film. Wouldn't happen with any other broadcaster.

Really? Thats a joke. I actually watched the ads to see if they would finish the film but changed channel when they moved on to the next programme.

Way to go RTE! Very professional.

God there was a film out few years ago, Of all people I think Danny Dyer was in it I thought it was pretty good. I kinda have a peeked interest in anything WW1 though Since school.

    Prob useless now though

    Edit: Here it is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0161010/

Hands down best WWI film in.....pretty much the last decade or two at least.

It was made for TV but don't let that fool you, is of excellent quality, very gritty and violent - to be honest I'd consider it the Saving Private Ryan of WWI movies, and the only one worthy of that title. Not that there's that many about....

Joyeux Noel is definitely a very good movie as well, but a very different kind. The Trench was just OK.

IMO, RTE's treatment of the viewing public is a disgrace. The programmes rarely start on time (bar The Angelus!). Because of that, I have to set my Sky Plus to start recording 5 mins before the advertised time and finish 10 mins after. It's bloody ridiculous!

Dead on with the Sky Plus comment. I'm always afraid that I'll miss the end due to RTE over-runs.

From what I'm seeing now though they mightn't even bother showing the endings of films anymore. :D

I hate that "the end" black screen. I actually like reading the credits and seeing if my guesses about who was who etc are right. That "the end" screen is horrible imho.

hmm, does this mean that if you record a film from RTE that gets rid of the credits you can then do whatever you want with it seeing as there are no legal warnings or caveats or copyright notices.....

I hate the "The End" screens too. I know I can check out who was in the film on IMDb or Wikipedia, but it just seems too abrupt. Credits are normally a nice wind-down.

Gallipoli is a great WW1 film, don't know what previous poster was on about calling it a bad film!

Is it even allowed to show a movie on TV and then not show the credits? Even if it's not illegal, it's certainly not ethical. All you see is the RTE logo in the corner of the screen, and with no credits being shown you could almost argue the point that they're trying to make it look like the film is an RTE production.

Some films have a TV version of their credits, which are sped up a bit to fit into schedules better, but RTE is the only broadcaster I've ever seen that completely disregards the credits altogether. Probably cause they can't keep to their own schedule cause they're too busy squeezing in more ads than should be there.

Firstly Gallipoli isn't a great film but highlights one of the terrible decisions of WW1 quite well.

Re RTE being amateurish, they are, but so are most TV channels at one time or another. Not too many would be worse than missing a goal in a Cup game for a Tic Tac advert like ITV managed to do, or the BBC ending their late night showing of snooker to show some politics guff or channel five being generally crap. The BBC never have their timings right and the pap that is the one show, whilst scheduled to start at 7.00, usually starts at 6.57.

Oh, and I though Joyeux Noel was great.

A Very Long Engagement is an interesting take on World War One too, though not a war film in the literal sense.

Maybe they just cut the end so that you wouldn't see the freeze-frame of Mel Gibson's buddy being shot?

Either way, it's poor form by RTE.

Plus not all films end with the credits come on, some have a finish after the credits.
