Laptop for student - vaoi maybe?

So as you might have guessed, I'm a college student and I'm looking to get a laptop.
Loads of people have a sony vaoi and I have to admit they look pretty nice. One of my friends said he got one for around €700 in Currys..? I'm on the Sony website now and the cheapest I found was 900 and something. But there's a lot of categories and I haven't looked at them all

So I just want to know if anyone knows of any cheap but good laptops out there?

I'm a first year computer science student, but don't let that fool you. Besides knowing what RAM is...I don't really understand all the specification stuff.

But it'd be nice to get something with a newish video card so I can play computer games and stuff. I'd also want to watch DVDs. I can't imagine my college stuff having to put any laptop through hard work, but I think it requires some decentish network card to be able to connect to the college network.

Oh and also, windows Vista isn't necessary. Infact, I find it quite annoying and would probably be happier with XP

If gaming is on the cards, i'd steer clear of sony tbh, you're paying a lot for the name and the of over rated quality, which means you'll get less bang for your buck. Buying online would probably be your best option for value for money, although good deals can be had in stores. Check out the dell studio range of laptops, they're quite nice and come with quite good spec for the cash.

Hard to go wrong with a dell vostro.

Have to agree with the not going for Sony sentiment, most of the cost is in the name and the Dell range isn't that bad especially if you are willing to spend that kind of cash, ask the student union about college deals with DELL, some have a discount arranged.

Most of those offers are quite poor. They try to bundle a lot of unnecessary crap into the deal.
