I'm not looking for medical advice just advice on the fasting beforehand.

I'm booked in for a check-up on Monday morning and will be having my cholesterol levels checked.

I've to fast from the night before. I'm just wondering is it ok to have a cup of tea, even just a few mouthfuls a couple of hours beforehand as I love my tea first thing in the morning.

fasting means fasting. For at least eight hours beforehand and not more than sixteen you can basically eat nothing. You can drink water, BLACK tea, BLACK coffee and take prescription medicines. DO NOT eat as any fats in your food will give an elevated result, ditto for the milk in your tea. If you don't do this, it's not a fasting sample and you can't trust the results.

Why would you want to compromise the results of your test? It's for your own good. Do not eat or drink anything unless your doctor specifically told you to.

As it happens, cholesterol sub-fractions are not greatly affected by recent meals. However, TG, glucose and other common measures your doctor will probably order are.

I'll know the results on Friday. Fortunately I was seen on time so didn't have to wait too long before I could have some tea. I get withdrawl symptoms if I don't have a regular supply of tea.
