Yes I have gone spilled a small amount of tea on the edge of my brand new MBP ...soooo stupid.:o

(I have been a user of laptops for 10years and always so careful..cant belive I have done this)

Did a very quick clean up but I think a small amount on tea got into the left side speaker vent (mag safe power side).

MBP showed no sign of issues but after a power down and restart ,,the OS can now not find the Hard Disk (Folder with ?),,,have tried boot from the OS X CD boot disk but no disc shows up only dvd drive.

I know Apple will not cover my Stupidity but has anyone any experience in this situation ?

What is the best repair route to take ..apple...3rd Party.. or just buy a new Hard Disk and install myself

remove the battery and put the MBP in your boiler room or hotpress, whichever is hotter, for a couple of days. You might be lucky.
Hard disk replacement is not easy, the top deck has to come off, but the hard disk is located to the left of the trackpad, not up at the speakers.
Have a look at ifixit.com for disassembly guides

Screwdriver time so! Then again if the tea has left no stain could it be a warranty job???

It has left a Stain on my Heart...! and €1600.00 of Hurt. (got it in Hawaii end of July)

Did you try booting with the Leopard DVD then going into Disk Utility? That should show you whether its seeing a hard disk or not.
Or have you tried booting from an external disk, I have a firewire disk with Leopard on it if you want to try that, but I'm in Dalkey.

Did the DVD ,,but no Hard disk shows up ...I am going to leave it overnight in a warm room .

So its back to using XP and an Acer Ferrari for now!

If there was sugar in the tea then it's unlikely this procedure will work. The liquid dries off leaving a residue which in going to attack the circuitry. You might just get lucky but I've seen these come back to bite later as corrosion kicks in.

My advice is bring it somewhere to get it cleaned properly. It's not a simple job but I've recovered a few laptops (none were Macs) with wine and coffee spilled into them. Out of 6 I think 4 were completely successful while one was beyond help and the other needed a replacement keyboard after a short while but is still working.

Another suggestion is to avail of the house contents insurance if you have any.

I hope it works out for you. Any idea what kind of a price its gona be to have it "cleaned"? I doubt it'll be cheap, especially if new parts are needed

Back in the world of Mac ,,,!

The only issue in the end after drying out was a broken hard drive. Now thanks to the folks at Dectek.ie, I have my MBP back up and running with a new upgrade, a 500GB drive so double the fun on the old broken 250GB one.!

Did your warranty cover anything, what was the cost?

Contrary to popular belief & ads, Macs ARE Personal Computers.

    Also, read the Charter ;)

I did. What's your point. Are you even entitled to instruct me on what to read?
    Didn't think so.

The Warranty would have covered the 250GB original drive ,,but I felt as it was going to be opened better to max out the drive to 500GB (€160 +vat) ...not much more than if I got the drive myself.

Re :the PC vs Mac stuff ,the drive failure was my fault moved the unit too quick and pulled the power while in use.

I will now have the best of both worlds when I set up a few VM 's on the new drive.

PS. Has anyone used Time Machine with a wireless NAS, how slow is it ?

I've been using Time Machine with a WD USB hard drive connected to my 802.11n Airport Extreme - the first backup (which was 50GB+) gave me problems and I ended up doing it with the Mac wired to the router - I remember another poster here had similar problems. After the first big backup, I went back to the wireless setup and it has, mostly, worked just fine since then. I can get 1GB across 802.11n in about 3-4 minutes - not sure about 802.11g but it would be a lot slower...

I didn't think that the warranty would cover accidental damage by the user!

My friend has let her mac slip off her lap to the floor a few times and now the casing has some hairline cracks in it, also the hinges have moved slightly and therefore when its closed it's not flush. She was in Mactivate and they said this wasn't covered under the warranty.

    What do you think?

It's important what you don't tell them ! Play dum about any possible damage by yourself.
