Wuta Kamille hand cream is really good and it's not expensive -around €2 for a small tin or €9 for a big tube. They have it in most chemists and a lot of supermarkets.
Before I put hand cream on I wash my hands with liquid soap and a spoonful of sugar. The difference is amazing.

I go between Sanctuary hand cream and Nivea (the blue pot), it's really great for dry hands. I used Johnson's hand cream and it was rubbish.

I use Neutrogena Concentrated Handcream. It comes in a small tube you can pop in your bag and as it's concentrated a little goes a long way!

Aveda's Hand Relief. Comes in different sizes, and I keep the small one in my bag all winter.

They make a Foot Relief as well. Amazing.

What's the sugar for? And does it matter what type?

The sugar sloughs off the dead skin and leaves the hands smoothe. Granulated sugar is best.
It's also fantastic for removing grease and motor oil from your hands ;)
