Anyone thinking of going? The flights are fairly cheap, and Washington would be rocking that week. I was listening to the parties election night on the radio, and was fuming I missed them, NYC was meant to be hoping.

I would imagine accomodation might be hard to get and expensive that week, but that is a great idea. I would love to go to Washington and you're right, there would be a great atmosphere that week. Bit pricey for me though so soon after Christmas!

The flights will be ferociously expensive seeing as it involves time travel. If Ryanair did these, then you'd probably end up several months away from your destination. Also, you may be disappointed to find that the election hadn't happened yet and people will look at you as if you'd two heads when you tell them Obama will win the election.

On a good point, however, you could make a killing by betting on the New York Giants to win the Superbowl. ;)

what's the second word in the thread title? You'll kick yourself.....;)

edit: unless you're referring to the '08 bit. And actually, you probably were. Ok, kick me instead.

I can't understand anyone (assuming your not American) would want to splash out money (unlesss you've got plenty to burn) to go and see a foreign President be innaugrated, i can think of much better things to do/places to see.

the flights arent that expensive at the moment. Airlingus and delta have flights for less than 300. Airlingus only fly every day, and for a cheap return flight you have to stay longer than a week. Delta have good deals tho.

Havent checked accom, would say its expensive all right. To above posters

"omg what a great idea" was this sarcastic? sounded it :pac:

"who would go to see a foreign president" would you have skipped the chance to see Kennedy inaugurated? Youll be telling your grand kids about this

Let's keep the Politics to the Politics forum.

Unless you have a constructive comment about the travel plans, there isn't really much need to share it..

I wouldn't have voted for him , but i'd say it will be one hell of a party..

I would rather fly to Alabama and watch it live in a redneck bar.

The collective groan as he starts his inauguration oath with "I, Barack HUSSEIN Obama...." would be hilarious :pac:

They would probably be watching Wheel of Fortune instead. :)

Thanks for the link BuffyBot. After reading it, I think ahmm no thanks. Accom is the main problem, some places are charging 300-400 for a night, in places as far out as balitmore, and the crowds sound like a bit of problem. I can now put that idea back in its box.

It is not just the 300-400 a night, the hotels want a min stay of 1 week.

if you really want to go,and i mean really, you could rent an estate car(stationwagon) and sleep in the back.or a bit more sensible rent an RV(camper van).

Are there many RV parks around the DC area?

The police would take a dim view of sleeping in a car.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 897 ✭✭✭oxygen_old

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately sleeping in a car would bring on a whole world of new problems. Not to mention that DC is freezing at that time of year. Nah definitaly think that would be one of those holidays where I would be asking "Why did I come here".

Now New York the week before Christmas, thats my original and bestest idea!

Have my flights and accommodation booked, and cannot WAIT!

I worked on the Obama campaign in Virginia for two weeks up until the election and it was one of the best things I've ever done in my life. Unfortunately the boyfriend couldn't get time off work to do it, so instead, he started sounding out costs for the inauguration. On election night, when it was clear that Obama had won, he booked the Aer Lingus flights and the place to stay that he'd been looking at.

Good thing too. The AL flights jumped up in cost the very next day. Don't know the exact figures but it seems like now it's over €500 for a return flight to Washington and I'm pretty sure we got it for closer to €250. Going to spend a few days in NY as well.

The actual tickets for the inauguration is going to be a problem (thanks for the link to that discussion btw BuffyBot, twas v useful). I made a few friends over there so going to see if there's any chance they can get them, but I'm guessing it's going to be a blood-from-a-stone kind of thing.

So have any of you lot booked anything yet?

was in DC last week for a couple of days. hotels are booked up everywhere. however, there's a lot of home/apartment owners who are letting their property out for the week of the innaugaration. the mayor said he was relaxing the normal restrictions on private homeowners letting their property out just for that week. it'll still cost a pretty buck or 2 but still cheaper than most other options.
