Very overdue library books......

Oh dear. Due to a month of extreme poverty (living on 20 euro for 30 days = malnutrition and inability to buy course books :( ), I still have 3 library books which are now almost a month overdue. It's completely my fault of course, but the fact is I've been avoiding returning them as I don't have the money to pay for them (getting paid next week....thank God) and am scared of the scolding and huge sum to be settled.

Does anyone have any idea/guesstimate how much I would be looking at? (Apologies to library worker boardsies :o , won't happen again I promise :p )

Email them to tell them the situation. When you return the books your don't have to pay the fine there and then, you can pay it at a later stage.

Well it's 50c a day for every overdue book.

    so 0.5 x 30days....is €15 x 3 books......€45 you probably owe.

Come in and talk to us.Bring the books in as soon as possible as they're continuing to generate fines the longer you have them out.
You can probably pay in installments or we might cut you a deal.
The main thing is just bring em in!!

The library can actually be quite good about cutting deals when you are actually in serious financial difficulty. They did it for me last year. Or maybe it was because I wore tight pants. Either way, the longer you leave it, the less understanding they're going to be. Get them books back ASAP.

This reminds me. I owe the library about 20 euro in fines from a few years back. Haven't got any books out in ages, and I'm not a student anymore, should I still pop in and pay off the fine or does it even matter at this stage?

What's the worst that could happen? Stop me from graduating? Ha!

    Bit late in Ronny's case.

I remember one Christmas I'd just let my books run over due by one day and couldn't make it back into college for at least two weeks. I sent the women who seems to run the Hamilton library an email explaining the situation and she very kindly removed the block and and renewed the books for me, meaning I wasn't faced with two weeks fines.

You can't graduate until you've settled all outstanding bills with the college. Its why they don't bother chasing you since the vast majority will end up paying in the end.

Thats fair enough but it is not policy in the berkeley to renew books if they've gone overdue and they havnt been returned. The reason for this is that people often place holds on books and they need to be returned or the holds system wont work.
The only thing to do in this case is return the books staright away,an email will get you short shrift as the books are so late.

Sorry, poor use of terminology in my part. There wasn't a hold on the books but a block/whatever on my account since the books where over due. It was literally the day after they where due to be renewed.

"elect(ip): elected but not yet installed in office; "the president elect""

I don't see why you corrected it

President elect status only happens after the electoral college meets. For the moment, he's correct.

I had a book overdue for a while there, and eventually I had the time to get into the library to hand it back. It was only five euro or something small, but I didn't have any cash on me, so I renewed the book til next week and I'll pay the fine then.

Best thing you can do is bring the book back, I'm sure they'll be nice about letting you pay the fine when you can. They probably just won't let you borrow books until you pay it all back. They're nice in there!
