And so it has come to pass.

As I predicted as far back as Sept on these very boards, the complete cave in by ATC ( or SOW's see previous posts)in the face of sustained pressure from church st traders led by the Italian mafia and the Northern Orangeman, against the new one way system.

The brave county manager, who tried vainly to stick to his innovative and forward looking concept was swept aside in a wave of protest from people who have only one thing on their minds...... their greasy tills.

This plan is now dead.As the great Boxer said "We only do what the people want"
Yea right boxer, lead from behind as usual.

Is there any democratic way we can get rid of these shower of useless nogood councillors?or maybe we just get the people we deserve.

My good man, thats a load of slanted bised boll***s you're after spouting.

The one way system that was put in operation was the most ill-concieved farce in traffic management that has ever come to light. I've have'nt much time for church st. traders either, but a dog with a hammer up its h*le could see that people were avoiding the town centre, simply because to get to it was a huge ordeal.

"This plan is now dead." Rightly so, if the last effort is the best that planners can come up with. Spend 35 minutes trying to get from the roundabout at the hospital to Castlemain st. and reflect on your "forward looking concept".

Well, the local elections are next Summer, so the denizens of Athlone can voice their opinion on their councillors then.

Feck what the people of Athlone think... Somebody has to take a stand and it is our elected representatives with the help of qualified advisors whom are doing that. If we left it for public vote like a referendum, the progress of this town would be at a snails pace. The council should have left it one way as everybody was getting used to it and there was not much disruptions to traffic.

The one way system was part of a strategic development plan that would make Athlone a vibrant Asthetically pleasing town.

And another thing... the car park in st peters square has to go... it should be made into a small amenity park. A car park in a square that boasts a big castle, a large photogenic church and that is adjacent to Athlones mini temple bar area... (Seans, castle inn, restaurants) is dirty and unnecessary. People would give out about the need for it, but just because Athlone is a big town and not a city, that doesn't alleviate the people of responsibilty regarding use of our land, etc. Going forward, we should be using small central carparks like these as anything else but carparks.

Its the people of Athlone who have to live there, and put up with the consequences of one of the poorest exercises in traffic management ever concieved. "Our elected representatives" are exactly that - people elected to represent the views, and best interests of joe public, not to ride roughshod over them.
Last time I looked, we still lived in a democracy. Perhaps some consultation with the great unwashed may have been in order?

Everyone was getting used to it - they were avoiding the town as if they had heard there was a fresh outbreak of the bubonic plague. It didnt work, nor could it work until the railway field is procured.
"not much disruptions to traffic" - do you drive??

Yes, agreed, however the traffic plan is based on the acquisition of the railway field. A one way system would be good for the town - provided some thought went into it in its next inception.
