This might sound really stupid, but it's a good check to see if you've gotten a hardware failure or a software/corruption problem.

-Put a PS3 game in your console.
-Now load up a PS3 game or demo that's on your hard disk.
-Press the PS button and see if the game disc now shows up.

If the disc now shows up you don't have a hardware problem, it's a hard disk corruption problem. A good way to check for this is to plug in a removable hard drive or flash drive, and try to do a system backup. If you get an error code that means your hard disk is corrupt.

This happened to me only last week, my PS3 wouldn't play any PS3 or PS1 games, but would play DVDs and PS2 games. I did a full format (did it overnight as it takes 4 hours or so) and that fixed my problem.

When you say that you reformatted the hard disk, was it a quick format or a full format? Only a full format will wipe everything and start you off fresh. Hope you were able to back up your stuff!

Do you have a 60GB PS3 or one of the newer ones?

Otherwise, I hear consolerepairsireland.ie are very good.

Have a look at the thread on this topic:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055301869

It sounds like the same Blu Ray fault that a lot of people are getting. The thread about this has several people who have got Sony do to the repair for free as although Sony will tell you that the PS3 has a 12 month warranty, all electronics in the EU actually have a 24month warranty by law.
